Greetings, all!
I thought I would share this in-progress shot with people and (hopefully) get some solid feedback.
I still intend on populating the scene with characters, but that's much further away from completion. I'm pretty happy with the lighting in the scene, but I still intend to add some more detail. Also, I'm hoping to add some depth-of-view work with the camera, but I haven't had much luck finding a plugin for MAX that will get me there. *shrug*
Also, here's the original image that Francis posted:

Oh wow, sir! You did a great job with this one. Texturing, modeling and lightning.
I really love it all and couldn't find anything wrong or out of place. The only thing that bugs me is that small rusty pillar in the very front of the pic. On the highest level. It just doesn't fit o the rest of the neat work imho. I can't explain it better. It looks too simple compared with the rest. |

Wow. That is one incredible CGI. Granted, you had a superb reference image, but your translation to pure digital art is still impressive.
I agree with kaylon, though. The white areas (windows and lights, apparently) are too white over their entire area. You probably already knew this, but my only suggestion is to tone down the edges of the white windows and to add some glow around the white lights. The reference art handled this already, so I'm sure that was on your "to do" list.
Can't wait for the finished product. |

...all of the above!!
i cant really offer advice on 3d techy issues
since im still workin my way through the
introductory MAX tutorials.
however,... when i look at the image i find
my eye wandering, theres nothing to focus on
but this will of cours be fixed with the
addition of the woman into the scene...
so i am in fact talking a pile of crap!
makes me want to watch blade runnner.
*stares into the distance*
someday, i too will model a scene like yours, oh yes... someday..oh yes |

my compliment is that it didn't look like a 3d render, but rather like a good matte painting to me at first. |

Besides the whites looking flat you did an awesome job recreating that piece. I'm also thinking the planet could use some more detail or maybe have a lunar effect over it. I can't wait to see how it looks when it's finished. |

Very nice, this is coming along well...what is wrong with MAX4's new built in DOF? From what I remember its much better than the previous version...have you messed around with it yet??

Thought it was a hi-res still from a Final Fantasy game at first glace. Don't know what to tell you besides keep doing what you're doing. It looks great.
I guess the white areas are a little flat, but I really think that's negligible. Maybe if there was a little more "fill" light down below to make the air a little thicker...
Here's something. The light coming through the arch in the back wall could be brighter. It has a nice shape that gets pretty lost as it is. Might be a nice place to introduce a little more color with the lighting?
Wish I knew more about modelling.

Gee.. U've made it look alot better seen the last time i saw your WIP on TeamGT Forum. This looks really like Francis' pic. U've even managed to duplicate alot of the textures depicted on Francis' image.
As for Crits.. I think where the white lights are showing through the glass, U might drop some muddy textures on the panes of the glass to mute the intensity of the light coming thru. Also Pure white light just seems unatural. A little tint to make it offwhite would help the ambience. I think you have reached a point where u have to step away from using francis' image as referrence and just go with your own aesthetic eye flesh out the scene as u see fit. But thats just me,
Did I mention this was a great undertaking? Here.. Lemme say it " GREAT JOB DOOD!! Francis would be Proud!"

Thanks for the great support and suggestions!
dr. bang - more time than I'd like to admit. I started work on this one before we had completed work on Myst III. As a result, progress on this piece ended up getting postponed several times. As far as perspective goes, Francis' illustrations possess such a strong sense of vanishing points, that developing this piece was easier than some I've worked on in the past.
Frosted Flame - Try looking under the couch. . . next to your keys
EvilToYLeT -- Thanks. Francis has helped with this one at varying stages, and has been great with offering suggestions
Digital Genesis -- Thanks.
S4Sb -- After looking at the image more, I agree. The form in that post could use some more breaking-up. Good idea.
kaylon/Berus -- Yeah, I had come to the same conclusion shortly after posting the pic. I'm going to try to push those white areas to more of the 'soft yellow' that I used on top of the archway. I will probably also add a bit more noise to the surface and glow to the surroundings. Effects are pretty low on my to-do list, though.
shamhead - I agree with you there. After spending some more time looking at the source, I decided that I definitely need to increase the contrast in the middle of the shot. The light coming from the far archway and kiosk/phonebooth definitely needs stronger intensity and less attenuation.
vesuvius - Wow! That's a great compliment! Admittedly, that wasn't what I was trying to do, but all the better in my opinion
Firefly - the planet in the background is just a matte painting I did in Photoshop. I agree that it 'pops away' from the scene more than I would like.
natec - I started this piece before MAX 4 was released. I usually don't like migrating across versions mid-project. However, I'll probably save DOF manipulation for the final pass, so it shouldn't be a big deal. I was just hoping for a way to do it in v3
Breakerboy2 - Yeah, I'm also a big fan of Squaresoft's games. The cinematography and effect work is always amazing. Lighting contrast. Check. Will do.
Laemtao - *chuckle* Yeah, this version is a little better than the last one on the conceptual design forum. I was going to add this image to THAT thread as well, but couldn't find the thread. *shrug* |

Great job. Perhaps some weathering of the lights. Maybe bug shit and dust collecting around the edges of the lamps.
I can't wait to see it finished!! ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

ouchie. that hurt...
my suggestion would be to adjust the lights - in francis's original the lights have more roundness (?) to them, in the 3D render they appear to be solid patches of white. also the 3D render is much darker and grittier than the original - pro or con, that's up to you to decide - but it also manages to appear newer, I'm not sure how. maybe you would like to add rust stains or leaking pipes or duct exhaust patches on the walls, something like that.
post the finished version, or an update. I'd love to see it. good luck. |

wow!
i think i've seen one or two rendered pictures with that amount of "life" inside...
really amazing how natural all that rendered stuff seems... i can't wait to see it finished. hello all render-poeople out there: rendering does *NOT have to look like plastic!
edit: maybe you could try to make a layer over the white area which has a copy of the white stuff but gaussian blurred... gives it more of a glowing effect than just white areas.

I think that the comment about the render looking "newer" than the painting is very actual. I think that adding a little crookedness and rounded details (I suppose that would make it look more steam-punk) and lighting certain areas up would even it out with the original... |

Well well, we have been busy haven't we mr. Self Ballard. Very Nice. You rule (as usual) Not much to say other than maybe a few lights to ad contrast in the shadows(purple and blues to add depth) but maybe that's not what you're after, just my 2 cents.
Miss you guys! |
