anyone out there got a good technique for defining the individual feathers on wings? of maybe just a good shot of a wing I can work from?

First impression: too many small feathers.
I suggest you look to the anatomy of a bird's wing:

As you can see a each side of a bird's wing has only 3 distinct types of feathers: the primaries, secondaries, and coverts.
You may also notice that the feathers responsible for flight are ASYMMETRICAL (sp.?) they are broader on one side of the central shaft than on the other.
Thirdly, take a look at the placement of the bones and joints, they should help with the pose....

The sword is either a big work in progress, or you need to get rid of it. Not too much else, the anatomy looks great, the wings are a bit on the comic side, you might want to take a look at the diagram above.

Go to my website, look in the painting/drawings section. Then, go to the concept/sketches section. In there, you'll see a piece with a girl that has wings and a huge claw on one hand.

I basically did the wings by first painting them in solid and hard edged, then using a small brush and quickly dragging the edges of each feather out in small strokes.
