This is way, way early in development, but I thought this test render came out kind of nice:

I've got a ton of stuff to refine and add, but I'm pretty happy with the composition and lighting. Not looking for hardcore critiques, just sharing.

Thanks guys.

I've recently instituted a policy of not mentioning what tools I use, primarily because digital art seems far too "tool-centric" these days. So to be as non-specific as possible, the terrain is made from a grid of splines, the textures are procedural shaders, and the grain/smudging was done post-render in a paint program.

Did a little more with it this weekend. I've got a flythrough rendering as well, but its taking 2 hours per 320x240 frame.

hmm I liked the other one better, looked more like a fantasy painting.
This new one looks like a bryce environment. Even though it's the same scenes the textures were better in the other render IMHO.

Even though the second one is a lot more heavy with texture then the first..it is more photo realistic then the first..so the second one is getting you closer to the topic of ya post..

It's very nice .

Kay.

DG: the finished piece will probably be in color.

I'm sure the lights and textures will change a bunch by the time I finish . . . I try never to lock anything down too early (except the basic composition).

Thanks for the feedback guys.
