I've been trying for a while to draw a couple quick pictures to practice creating decent images in small amounts of time. Every time i try though, something doesn't seem right about the picture. I've looked at a lot of art from other people but I can't put my finger on it. what am i doing differently? is it the color selection? anyway, here's my latest image...
damn geocities. think you have to drag the link into the address bar: http://www.geocities.com/chronicrage/guy.jpg

It's tough to make quick pictures look good. Instead of thinking of making presentation pieces, perhaps you chould approach it more as a simple problem solving excercise. Focus on one thing that you want to accomplish in five minutes. Like capturing movement, or just blocking in values, or just a color study. It's like jotting down something you want to remember, or doing a little math problem on a scrap of paper. If it's only for yourself, you can't fail - it's just a step in a larger process.

I dont know how much art background you have (since it was a fast pic who knows?). It might just be that you don't have enough practice at painting with computers and need more foundation. It might be you just arn't that great with working quick? I dunno hehe. I think a lot of people on the forum have a really good grasp of the human form and general art theory (professionals! ). I dunno. If i just put my foot in my mouth, i am sorry! |

yeah, the main thing that makes (at least my) quick pics good (and often better than my drawn-to-dead-pics) is that i just try to quickly outline a certain problematic zone or composition or whatever. if something fits, its just a short step to make a little shade here and there, add some details and you're gone. just don't think about "creating an artwork in 5 minutes 34.5 seconds". just try to outline it. if the first one doesn't fit, make a second one... |
