Your drawed sergeant seem to say: "Eye man look, my finger is shrinked!"

The problem is that the hand an the fingertip have to be in seperate layers.
In the movie there is much more blur in the foreground...

But "i" think youre problem is the feeling. You draw a drilling sergeant with hate in his eyes!! Dont sit there and think *doodeideldoo i like drawing* ..you have to feel the hate of the sergeant and your fear of him in yourself. Don't look for the exact lines.. ..youre feeling will draw them automatically

Duracel: yeah you're definately right that his hand should be much bigger. And the hat should be a bit tilted, didnt notice that.

About the rage, I think it will be much better when I ink it. At least I hope so.. Thick black ink around his eyes should make the white in his eyes stand out more, and thus make him look angrier. I think I'll make his eyes a bit larger too. More open.

Right now it's getting late though, and I should probably go to bed soon. I'll continue tomorrow. Thanks for your input Duracell!

I'm drawing another scene from Full Metal Jacket, this is the drill instructor screaming at a private. Anyway, what do you think of it so far?

I need comments on the hand, and about how I can make him look more mad

I'm not sure what style to go with once I'm happy with the initial sketch. Probably a cartoony style.. hmm..

I've been trying to improve the hand, using both a mirror and the frame from the film as referencee, and while it's looking better it still doesnt look good enough.. I cant seem to get the index finger right. Any tips?

One thing I'd definitely note from duracel's post is that for the sarge, aggressive and hard lines convey a much better motive to the pic.

Any technical problems aside, your linework seems very gentle for the character it belongs to =)

hope that all made some sort of sense...

I've started inking it now, but I'm not sure I like the way it's turning out..Should've gone for a soft pencil instead.
