I think you need to have flatter areas and more textured areas.
The subject here is as much the paint use and the objects.
Try to simplify your shapes more. |

well I think they 're fabulous--I never could do much with acrylics, oil was my thing--the shine and the transparency you got is great--congratulations, you have three really good pieces here! |

worthless_meat_sack-
So are you saying that I need more corntrast in terms of complexity vs simplicity? If so, I couldn't agree more. I thank you for pointing that out. I guess I was just too tied up in the color...lol
Iconoclast-
Thank you for your very encouraging words!

I'm not going to disgrace this thread by adding to worthless_meat_sack's post. I will say this... these are wonderful studies, and show a raw grasp of powerful color...
You hereby rock. Amen. |

hey dude, nice work. it's not the best painting in the world, but i gott tell ya, it's fresh. fresh as in you direct painted it. didn't look as though you glazed over it with layers after layers. you seems to have a good grasp of the colors which allowed you to do that, like Feeb said. man i wish i got a better sense of color. I suck. can't do direct paint. may i ask how long did it take for each piece? and if i maybe ask how you keep your acrylic fresh and usable while you paint? i find that stuff dries too quickly both on the pallette and on the painting surface. i used to dump the paints in little plastic cups wiht a bit of water to maintain moisture, so i can take a little break and come back with the mixed paints still usable. i used acrylics for about two years in college, it smells way better than oils. felt like I could get high on it. shit i think my brain is fugged. the drying time of the medium is the only thing that bugs me the most. tell me what you do it. sorry, i talk to much. i am new here, so got alot of questions. |

Here's a ROUGH study in value and temperature...done in gouache, and unfinished. It's a thumbnail i did 4 the final painting (which I'm working on now). I put an orange gel over the light to get an exagerated warm light source. I wanted to study value/temp relationships under exagerated circumstances...and what better to test it on than a Rubix cube??
This was done in about 20 min (gouache is a pain in the ass, but i still love it)
ignore the orange & yellow splotch on the right...just wanted to test the paint's color
Thank you everyone for your critiques...I too think that those still life's are a bit boring, but I like the colors
