Capturing an emotion or a pose is always something of a challenge. I thought I would have a go at another portrait but with my main focus on her expression. My goal with this one is to convey a sense of intrigue, compassion, and surrender, all bottled up in a single tear.
This is what I have so far. I'm going to extend the canvas down to see her cheek, perhaps a strolling tear, nose and lips.
Any suggestions on anatomy or otherwise are greatly appreciated. Thanks a heep !

hey man, love the idea. something we'll all need to put some time into if we're ever going to get it right!
i like how it's turning out. I think it might be a good idea to define the lines a little. Not for the end result, but so that you can see exactly what causes this emotion. I think that all to much we rely on indistinct lines to give the effect we're looking for. Not that that's bad, but if we can have good solid lines, then It's even more so. I hope that made sense.
have you ever checked out the book facial expressions? i'm not exactly sure who it's by, but it's a unique book. So much info on why the face looks like it does, and the particulars about which lines move to express what. HIGHLY recommended.

Well, I can definetly see the emotion in the piece. It's nice work which really speaks. One thing that bothers me though is that the bottom of the eye looks swollen to me. You might want to darken the value under the eye a bit more so it isn't so pronounced. You pic seems to have different ranges of fuzziness to it, and I would concentrate a bit more on sharpening up the area above eye and the tears, either that or blur the lashes a bit more. |
