Hello,

Kind of new here, well, been here on and off. I'm looking for advice on proportions and stuff. I know the sketch and the photo look different, but I can't tell what's the difference? What would also help the composition and flow of the picture? Thanks for all your advice in advance!

Here's the sketch.

Here's the reference.

Thanks for your help!

Dude that is so cool. Thanks for that. What program did you use to make that funky gif?

Anyway, thanks. That makes it so much clearer. Gonna get to work fixing it up!

Heh, Awetopsy, when I first glanced at your post, I thought you were flaming him for doing a photo trace.

Bonez: Nice job. The sketch IS off, but it still looks good. If you're trying to improve your accuracy, well, practice is the best you can do. It's amazing how quickly you can learn, when you really try. What helped me the most, actually, was doing self-portraits in a mirror. I had to do six or seven before I was really happy with the results (and the last one I did took about four hours to get the proportions right), but you'll learn a little bit with each one you do.

With that said... some basic things to watch for. While you're drawing, constantly measure one feature against the others. Look at how high one eye is compared to the other, look at where the edge of the mouth lines up with the features above it (in your source pic, for instance, the edge of her mouth is almost directly underneath the edge of her eye.) Pay close attention to angles too - like how her cheek is at about 45 degrees. Use your pencil as a measuing device, if it helps. And PRACTICE! (And don't be afraid to throw away sketches that don't turn out.)
