hey guys, just whipped up a portrait of russell crowe in gladiator, using a b&w pic from this month's cable guide... sketch was about 5-10 minutes, and the shading was done in about half an hour... i'm not done yet, but i was hoping for some c&c... also, hope someone can give me some tips for doing hair... unfortunately i'm using a touchpad right now until i can get my intuos 6x8 next month... :P

hey guys,

updated the portrait by working on the hair... not sure how this looks, but hope for some c&c... incidentally, for the hair i tried painting it solid black with soft edges using the airbrush, then i painted a couple short streaks of white and middle-grey and used the clone brush tool with low opacity... then i dropped the opacity of the black hair layer so it didn't overpower the face... let me know if anyone has any better suggestions...

Post your photo and I can help you more.

I bet if you look at the head in it's simplest form, there are different values to the forehead, nose and cheeks. If the light is diffuse from above, whatever faces upwards will get the most light. Feel your own head, look at it in the mirror, I bet your nose faces upwards more than than the front plane of the forehead. Even though the cheeks may face upwards somewhat, the light is cut by the diffuse shadow from the brow.

So get these big planes of the head working first, don't worry about smoothing anything.

Very good advice from meat_sack. Once you've got the basic values down, well, anything I can say is really secondary to that. But be careful of going to pure black in so many places. Because his hair, beard, eyebrows, neck, and all the little creases are a flat black, they're starting to look like they're in a flat plane. Look more closely at your photo, and... well, this is kind of going back to meat_sack's advice, but pay attention to how bright or dark all those areas actually are. Unless you've got a really bad photo, I'll bet none of it is pure black.

Your sketch reminds me more of Mr. T then of Russell Crowe.
