I have real problems with creating backgrounds, i can imagine one perfectly, but just can't get it how i visualise it. Anywho, this is a picture i'm doing for my mum's birthday, it's a picture of my dog (white Alsation/German Shepard, called ZAK), looking kind of wolf like, and my mum loves wolves! So far i'm really happy with it, but I want to get a moon in the top right, and haven't decided if I should have sillouhettes of grass in the wind, a cliff edge, stream or a waterfall in the background. Any input/help/suggestions/ideas are appreciated immensely!

Really cool looking wolf...er dog. The dog itself is so dominant I don't think you should add much more to the picture. I do think the moon would complement the painting a lot as far as layout and light sourcing goes and maybe a small outlines of mountains in the background, but nothing to get your eye away from the dog.
Did you use the smudge tool to get the strands of hair?
Can't wait to see the final pic.

I used the airbrush for the hair to get each bit where i wanted, then went over with the smudge to get a feathered, softer look.
Thanks for the suggestion, I think i might go along with that, I want the moon in for definate.

What about a cave or a deep canyon using cold, dark, vulcanic rocks?

hey man! hehe yea hair is really time consuming and hard to do right but you pulled it off beautifully! i dont really have any suggestions for the background, i think a simple moon would suffice. great job man, really well done!

BAERB: You are joking, right?
DR.BANG: thanx for the compliment, but i think the flag might look a bit cheesy?! I'm going for a serious sort of thing. Thanx anyway
ROUNDEYE: LOL Yeah, much happier now, thanks dude. Sorry about getting your hopes up before!

The dog looks great. I think a fairly abstract background would suit it perfectly...a misty moon in the top right corner would be all I'd add.

Very beautiful rendering!

I don't think you should add anything except some clouds, lit by the moon, for several reasons: first, we're looking up at the dog and it seems we wouldn't be able to see the horizon even if mountainous. Second, a full moon with a wolf is a little clichee... Third, the light-source would seem to be off the image to the right.
In case you feel that little fluffy clouds are not what you have in mind, I did this quick sketch to show that's not what I had in mind either, but something more dramatic and windswept.

Thank you very much Steve for your imput, i definatly had a windy scene in mind, thats why i did his fur in such a manner. I won't use you're version, i'll try to work from your idea, and possibly others.

[edit] I did a quick finish on it. It's in the finished gallery now.
