I got a side job from a museum here in town. They want a cartoon character to teach children about archeology. What they want is a female hispanic named Maria. She is to be "cartoony" but not powerpuff girls and not comicbook style. She is to where a white T-shirt and Kaki shorts with hiking boots. So, after several sketches I came up with this. How does it look? Do you think it fits the description? Please let me know what you think.

Works for me. Is there any archeoligist specicic equipment you could add to her attire? This might help nail it down a little more, but then again maybe not. Looks pretty damned good.

That's perfect Agent.
But as mentioned, adding a archeologic item would help.

Great character. I hope you aren't offended, but she looks like she could star in a Disney movie. (some people don't like their art compared to Disney).

Perhaps a rock hammer in a belt loop or some maps. For some reason I always think of Indiana Jones when I think of archaologists. You may want to sling one of those canvas bags over her head.

Your artwork is great agent44, I just hope I helped some.

Hey how about a utility belt and a pick axe...some cool boots too!!! BTW I love the design. I cant get enough of simple clean fun cartoon characters. reminds me of iron giant. I took the liberty of drawing out my suggestion. I am one of those people that think better visually... here ya go...

Well, I just got back with my meeting at the museum. They really liked the character. They want 9 different drawings of her doing various arch. things. I'll be sure to post them when I finish them. I'd love to hear what you all think.

St. Seneca- I don't mind being compared to disney. or warner brothers for that matter. I was kinda going for that "look"

KOryH - nice addition.

hey agent, i personally like it alot, however if its going to be used in an educational setting i might tone down the size of the lips and/or eyes to make her more approachable for young girls. currently she seems a bit overly feminized (to me) to really connect with girls. though what do i know, i'm a 26 year old man and i think she's checking me out... other than that pc take, i must say it follows in your line of excellent work.

P. Nasty- that's what I was worried about. I did a bunch of sketches, and finally came to this one. But they didn't seem to mind so I'm running with it.

I think she should have an unweildy rack. That would rule.

I'm just kidding.

I think. I can't tell anymore.

Rage-lion- no, it's for the Mesa Southwest Museum. If you're in the neigborhood you should stop by. Especially if you like dinosaur bones.

I work with a number of archaeologists and most of them look like ZZ Top rejects and would frighten children to tears. You have, however, captured their spirit well in your caricature. I would definately stick with the boots and the hat if you can.

Looking forward to seeiing the rest. Good luck!

I'm not sure why a hispanic female. Come to think of it, the lady heading up the project is a hispanic female. Maybe that's why.

I mis-read the title as Maria the proctologist, needless to say, I was confused...

I think you could push this a little more agent44. More stylized would be good. In terms of adding an Hispanic look, the eyes and skintones would be the main points to play up. Check out The Road to El Dorado for a great example (voiced by Rosie Perez).

Also, Maria Conchita-Alonzo (sp?) would be a great reference for female hispanic character traits. Worth a look anyway...

You don't mention if this character will be animated. If it's only still poses, you will really need to push the action to get some personality across. Personality is what always makes a good character great.

Keep investigating!

Agent-

I use to live in north Glendale a couple of years back. Never made it to Mesa much.
Well, I can see why they would want a hispanic female...living in the Phx area.
Southwest culture, Mexico right there, also the Indian tribes all around that area. She would reach more that way and draw them in to the museum. Hook them.

v.m. - I'd like to push it more. but the deadline's pretty tight. I would like to go way stylized but they wanted something a bit more traditional.

coincidentally, I did check out the road to eldorado.
It will just be still poses. good advice there about pushing the action. thanks

I'll bump this one back up because it's worthy and I should have posted this in my earlier reply...

I'm sure the museum that you're working for will be able to provide you with plenty of reference, but in case there is anything extra you need, I have scads of emailable (?) archaeo photos of anything, everything, you-name-it, that I can send you. Respond here and I'll email you...

Good luck!

Is Mesa anywhere near the Dinosaur National Monument? I went there when I was about 8, loved the place. If I weren't an artist, I'd be a paleontologist.

Or maybe a nuclear physicist...

Maybe
