Hey,
Needless to say, I need work on my extinct reptiles. So here's the latest thing from thirty-five minutes of goofing around with my Wacom tablet. I know my dinosaur anotomy is way off. I'd appriciate it if you could take the time to comment on this before I drop it on to a background.

Add another leg? If you know your anatomy's off, fix it? |

It looks like it just needs a little cleaning up. Maybe add some stronger lighting to give it more depth and less 2d-ness.. a nice highlight on the eyeball would add a nice sense of realism. As for the anatomy being off.. it's not like there are any specimens to use as a reference |

Thanks for the suggestions. I worked on it a little more this morning and came up with a fiew different things. This next image, I tried applying some of your tips. Is this what you had in mind? I know it still needs cleaning up though. As for the anotomy, I'm no real expert so you'll have to go easy on me. For a background, I was thinking of putting it in a swampy mucky riverbed, standing of a kill with blood on it's muzzle. Nothing new, I know that's what everybody does.
Sorry about the size of the images, I know they're way to huge. I just couldn't bare to resize them.
Here's and alternate coloration. Which one is best?
Thanks again for the crits and suggestions. Keep'em comming! |

If it were me, I'd prolly stick a shadow underneath him so he's not "floating".
Lookin' peachy

Thanks for the feedback. As for the shadow, I would except I'm making a background for him (or her) now. It's going to be a swampy marsh with some dead thing in front of him.
If there are any dino experts who are reading this, I was wandering if you could think of any indiginous herbivores that my spinosaurus could be snacking on (hence the blood on his face on the brown version). Could you think of anything that lived in the same time or place? Something he'd probably be able to take down without damaging that flimsy sail? |

What if he were to eat a giant turtle...Its not hard to catch but the fact that he got through the shell proves he's strong. Just an idea.. |

Well, I see what you mean in terms of lighting. Since I actually wanted to be a real dark blood-red, I'm thinking of maybe flattening the tones a little and adding very subtle lighting just on the top of the head, the curve of the neck, rib-cage, pelvis, and tail, while maybe flattening the tones of the torso area and thigh. I like what you did with It's opposite leg and hands (The sail's a little wierd), I think my version was way too dark. I wasn't even sure about it even looking like a leg if you know what I mean.
As for adding it into a scene, I'm just now beginning to think that a profile of a dinosaur eating something dirrectly infront of it would look a little boring. It siply isn't a dinamic enough portrait to make it actually doing something besides strolling through a swamp or forrest.
Oh yeah I almost forgot. Anyone here seen the JP3 trailer? It turns out that my spinosaurus is WAY off! The movie poster shows it with a head like a crocadile and huge bear-like hands. I guess I'll have to file this one under "Hypothetical Spinosaurus-like creature reptile dino-thingy"
Thanks for the imput. Keep those Ideas comming. |

ooops, I just replaced my brown version with my latest, Can you tell? It's the one with the little doodles on it. So what do you all think? I re-did the hand and foot on the side that isn't facing the camera (they were bugging the heck out of me). I also strenthened some of my shading while adding the little bit of lighting I felt it needed (probably still needs work). It still needs a lot of cleaning up as well as stronger brush strokes in some obvious areas. I'll post something as soon as I have a significant change or improvement ready. For now though, what do you guys think? (can you even tell I did anything?) |

Well, it's definitely easier to see. For a composition, your dinosaur kind of looks like it's in "Alert!" mode. How about putting something in that is making it's non-existent hair stand on edge? Hunting the hunter, so to speak.
I like the changes.
Hey, would you mind critiqueing the T-Rex in the finished gallery I posted?
