Yeah, I've been working for a little while now. I've been doing a lot of art for a while, but I've normally kept to the texture variety and I have built up a bit of notariety within the small community that I work in. Unfortunately, I have always been unable to draw, so in the past few weeks I have been desperately studying the human face and attempting to teach myself to draw. I've made a lot of headway, but I know that I'm still lacking in many areas. I have also been cursed in the fact that I have neither a drawing pad nor a scanner, so anything I could have drawn isn't likely to get out. I started on this face today, entirely digital with the mouse. I'm happy with the nose and lips, but I'm having trouble sharpening the rest of the face, and I know I'll have troble drawing the eyes. Ironically, the easiest thing for me to draw with a pen/pencil is the hardest to do with a mouse. Well, without drawing this out much further, I just want to ask for all comments on how I can sharpen the face and/or improve anything on the face.

Sorry to anyone on a dialup that has to wait. I didn't want to lose any quality so the comments I get help me more.

It's always cool to hear that someone is trying to get back to basics and learn to draw. I LOVE drawing

I think this thread might help you out:

And don't skip over reading the Sargent notes, I think they are really important. Try to do the exercise for yourself.

As for this picture, you might also try using a hard edged brush to prevent the bluriness. Also, shading with black tends to look a bit off. Try shading with darker skin tones or cool colors/complementary colors. Varying the colors in your skin tone can make a face look more life-like I think

Here is another link you might find useful:

Color can be intimidating when you first start out, and it can distract you from the more important parts of your image like proper form and value. Maybe you can try this again but do it in greyscale then worry about the coloring later?

Hope this was helpful.
