I decided to go for a looser piece than I normally do. I'm pretty pleased with it, given that I used no reference, but I'm sure there's something slightly off with the features.
Please feel free to draw over this or give suggestions for improving facial anatomy. I know I could look at a photo, but this is more constructive as far as I'm concerned.
Thanks in advance.

edit- boy does mine look ugly! i need to practice w/ tablet more :)

I'm no expert on this area, but I will tell you what I consider wrong.
The nose is flat. and on her right a bit "edgy".
The two "lines" underneath the nose also seem a bit wierd. Maybe they are to strong.
Like it anyway! |

I've been staring at the original for a little while when it finally struck me what it reminds me of: old Russion fresco's! You know, from the 19th century. They had a similar flat feel, with little tone variation from forehead to cheek to chin. Very distinctive and quite interesting looking. On the other hand, I've just come from Don Seegmiller's site (I'm slow) and the repaint is directly from one of his paragraphs on how the skin-tones actually vary. Very nice job. ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

Never have I had so much trouble trying to post an image before. But now, it's become a mission and I will be damned if I don't get this thing to work right!

I've made a few changes.
Tried to bring out the colour in the skin
Narrowed face slightly, bringing left eye to the right, and added more shadow to left side to bring nose forward a little.
It's not perfect by a long way, but I think it's best to start a fresh piece rather than try and correct fundamental flaws in this one. It's funny how you start to think a piece looks fine when you stare at it for too long.
Here's the update:

Well, I posted the picture on a new site, so hopefully this will work this time. . .
First time posting on this forum and I get to help some one-- Whoohoo!! I think I might be able to help you a little in the anatomy department.
I only labled the areas of the face where light would be kind enough to show us anything. If you get an anatomy book and compare the muscles of a skinless face with the letters I have indicated, then hopefully that will help you in your quest for deeper knowledge. Some books I would suggest are "Anatomy Lessons from the great masters" and (I hope I spell it right) "Cyclopedia Anatomae"
A couple of notes: The shadow at "G" goes around the carledge of the nose and would end between said carledge and the end of the nasal bone. So you can look to here to know where the underlying bone is located. Knowing where the bones are is fundamental to good anatomical drawing. Also "F" while very light, goes from the cheek bone under the eye and connects to the cartledge of the nose. It is this muscle that allows you to wrinkle your nose. Now, notice the cast shadow under her nose. I left it angular like that to better show you the form of the upper mouth as it meets the cheek going away from you.
Something else before I go is to mention that while the eye on our right is done VERY well, the one on the left goes flat and isn't looking in the same direction. You can avoid this by imagining you are drawing the eyes as two balls next to each other in perspective. Also think of everything in terms of simple forms in perspective and you will do fine.
I hope this helps a little.
