Hi all,
I'd like to get some feedback on a project I'm developing. See image below:
Media will be a printed and online graphic novel. Basically, it's a comic book which uses a more 'cinematic', painted style (PS).
Graphic forms will be used to tie panel borders and narration boxes together, and lead the viewers eye to the next panel /page.
Format shown here is ONE PANEL, of a double page spread. Sorry, but I can't post a full page. Also, don't try to read the narration, it's just dummy copy.
Content wise, this scene takes place in prehistoric time. So we're looking at early earth.
So questions:
How many regular comic readers would like to see a comic in this style?
If you don't regularly read comics, would something like this make you want to read a comic?
Larger versions can be found here:
Panel 1 - 112k
Panel 2 - 108k
Created on a Mac, so please excuse if they seem dark.

Hey
I think it's a great idea..
I would love to read comics like that, at least i think it would be great.
And the panel looks cool..
Quite a project though, will take ages to complete a while novel.. But DO IT, and send me a copy when it's done =) |

Cinematic style stuff is totally viable. Heavy Metal would probably love to publish it when complete (pure speculation, but they seem to have a lot of highly rendered, movie-like comic strips)
Out of curiousity, what's the technique used here? Was it all photoshop/painter, or is there some 3D work?
Very Nice |

Mmmm, makes me think of an early issue of Jim Lee's WILDCATS I have. Image Comics was bringing in so much dough then that this freaking comic has TWO double gatefold spreads, for which Mr. Lee created panels that spread across three whole pages out of the four. Excessive, for standard comics, but wow.
I like this concept. "Printed Cinemascope" definitely has its own visual appeal. If the visuals that will be used can live up to the format, I'd say that you'll have a winner.

Thanks for taking the time replying...
Bibbe: glad you find it cool. Not all panels will be this detailed. Most will be more impressionistic in style. Panels like this will be the money shots. A panel like this needs more refinement as it is setting the scene for the story. Once I done that, I'll be able to get away with rougher, more suggested panels. First issue (of probally six) will be out around August. Possibly distributed through Image or Dark Horse.
Frostfyre: the image is totally photoshop. I use noise and texture to break the image up so it doesn't look flat. I only use 3D for complex shapes. Glad you like it.
Jzero: hey...I like the term Printed Cinemascope. That might just catch on. You'd better trademark that one...
Again, appreciate the feedback.

I think it's one of the best ideas in sequential image publishing for years. You beat me to the punch mate.
I stopped buying comic books/graphic novels because they all end up looking the same. Can't wait for this. But as always, story, story, story.
Good to see a fellow Aussie with great ideas. |

Hi Ankaris,
Thanks for the kind words.
I agree with you on the state of comics today. The level of sophistication needs to be raised if the format is going too survive. This is my attempt.
Good point on the importance of story. So far It's been six months in the making, and most of that has been research and writing. Email me off the forum if you'd like a sneak peek of the script.
Thanks again. |
