I'm new here, so be gentle,...please???
I've been visiting this forum for some time now, but have never posted anything. I don't know why. I just realized that this is an awesome resource of extremely talented folks who're definately on top of their game, yet they're always more than willing to offer up some genuine advice to us mere mortals on how to make our own work better. That said, I have to say that upon discovering who frequents this forum, the fact that more than a few of my idols are looking at my stuff gets me all giddy Well, enough of the chit-chat, let's get to it.
This was, and still is, a pencil sketch that I was playing with yesterday. It started out as a 'space-marine' suit, but quickly evolved into,...well,...this killer-bot-from-hell. Though not completed (left arm was missing, among other things) I thought it was lookin' pretty cool, and I was bored, so I threw it into Photoshop and slapped (partially) some color into it this evening. After cloning the right arm over to the left and futzing with a lot of other stuff, I thought, 'Hey,...why not see what the folks on Sijun have to say about it and have them suggest how to finish it <takes another swig of beer>'.
I have a couple of ideas in regard to where this one is going, but I'm curious to find out, first of all, what you think of the overall design of the,...COMBOT we'll call him, and second what I might do with the pose/surface-texture/background/lighting..etc.
Here are my thoughts:
1) New left arm: coming forward,...doing something cool (firing ray-o-death, holding bad-ass weapon, etc.)
2) New legs:...gonna make 'em beefier,...like Hershel Walker-type legs (add one joint), with cooler looking, more rounded joints that tie-in closer with the upper body. Also, work on the hip-joint some more,...not workin' for me currently.
3) Feet, gonna do somethin' with the feet,...don't know what, but I'm gonna do somethin'.
4) Lighting,...first of all, I'm gonna make it 'consistent',...I kinda like the hot spot on top of his head and the glints coming off the hardware,...well, at least some of it anyway (didn't get that far). I'll also introduce some ambient lighting of some sort,...from somewhere,...to hit the less illuminated areas.
5) Surface-Texture: while I'm a sucker for the glossy, high-polish look that's ever so popular with the kids, I can also see this guy with a beat-up, corroded texture - like he's been to hell and back. Or even an anodized-metal. What do you think? As you can see, I kinda have it all goin' on currently, but the matte finish you see is merely the middle-value for the glossy finish that I never,...finished Let me know your thoughts.
5) Background,..Hah! I obviously slapped this in for at least 'some' contrast, but I'm DEFINATELY going to work on that. After I saved it off for the night,...I realized that if I gave this guy a racket, and threw some stripes on the ground, he'd be in the French Open!,..."Service, Monseur Combot."
In any case, I've rambled on enough for a first time poster. Look it over, and let me know your thoughts.
