Hi there,
I've been toying around with some model renders today, and decided to try making them look like action figures as a joke. My problem is that I can't get the plastic packaging usually used for these kinds of figures to look right, and I wasn't able to find a tutorial for that either. Maybe one of you has an idea how to get those?
Here's an example, the black outlines around the figure and it's equipment are meant to be the plastic boxes.
Oh yes, before you say it sucks: it's far from finished, I want to see if I can get the plastic to look good before spending more time with it. |

if youre using 3ds MAX, how about doing a patch grid with loads of polys and using displace? |

My suggestion would be to take a patch or any high poly flat surface and use melt in 3dsmax over it, then 100% opacity and very shiny, maybe some anistrophic mapping... I don't know if that is the effect you're talking about but maybe it will help.

Hmm... I don't have 3dsmax, and don't really plan on purchasing it either... the renders where done with 3d exploration, a pretty easy tool meant for renders only. But the plastic needs to be done with Photoshop somehow... |

Well, looking at your blister dieline:
Your black line probably indicates your inner blister, the outer blister would just be the basic square, right?
(The inner blister holds the product in place the outer, holds the inner blister in shape.
The outer blister will be very translucent and will have highlights and shadows equal to where your light source comes from. The farther away your inner blister is away from your outer blister the more light it will reflect, dependent on the direction of the light source. If your light source is directly in front of your package 100% of the light would be reflected back in your face.
I would start by adding highlights and shadows where the dies are, then filling in with 100% white wherever there would be the pvc container. Then scaling down the opacity down to anywhere from 3-10% as a start and see how it comes in and adjust accordingly. Don't forget the j-hook so it can go on a peg and leave a half an inch all the way around where the plastic would seal onto the paper!
Good luck,

I e-mailed you a revised dieline, you should move your product down if this was a real toy. The outer two lines are where the blister seals to the package, the 4 areas whch are whiter than the rest are the inner blister BUT should be behind the product. You should add some shadows behind the product. The rest of the area between the seal... visualize a shell that is on top of the whole thing. (The seal is lowest area, attached to the paper. The inner bliste follows, say an inch high. If your toy was an inch thick then the outer blister would be resting right on top at two inches. Make sense?) I added some general highlights for reference. What is not shown and what should be added is some depth of the blister and the sharp edge highlights of the package all the way around (left of gun and beneath feet).
Re-adjust your type and graphics, add those highlights and you will have a sweet package!
I can't post the image I sent you, you may want to so everyone knows what I am talking about and can share. *shrug* Next stop, jobs as package designers!

or you could always do filter:artistic lastic wrap.
take a LONG time tweaking the settings tho, otherwise it'll look pretty bad.
