well what can I say... Its a cool loking design but 1280x960 rez? ouch.. one of the rules of HTML and WEbdesign today is "never make a website so big that people need to scroll around... industry standard is set for 800x600.
also youve got waaaay too much unsused space in the top frame. nuthin but colored bars moving back and forth which seem to have no purpose...
Sorry Idont really like this.
how would I improve it? I would use only the top area for everything. shrink it down to 800x600 freindly rez and dont be afraid to cover up those robot thingies...
hope Im not killin you here. :/
Im not trying to rip it to shreds but I think it needs some changing.

i go with awetopsy for the comments
most of the screens are still under the 800*600 resolution (which gives you a 760*420 working space and less for people using a huge navigation bars)
i guess a pop up is not the solution ; people are used to warez and porn sites and usually hate sites launching on pop-ups without being adverted
Why didn t you cut the top frame on two parts ?(the nav on the left and the information frame on the right instead of an huge frame on the bottom ?) humm maybe you wanted to keep alive this drawing of your friend ; well the pic is really nice but web design is not really art it is mainly featured to display and enhance information ;
You have to keep it understandable and easily accessible to the eye
Ask your friend to cut this flash on two parts (you can keep the drawing for the home)and make a background repeated for the over pages.
Hope all of this makes sense
cheers

Both the guys make good points, tell your friend to set his resolution to 800x600 and get a screen cap (print screen button). From there use your editing software of choice to cut out the viwable area in the browser to use as your base for what is visible at any given time.
Also its a good idea to make your website scalible, which means that if I go to a higher resolution then 800x600 at any time the items on that page will expand to fill the viwable area in my browser. Go check out the Planet Network built by the fine men and women of Gamespy Industries. www.planethalflife is a very good example.
Now that thats all out of the way the graphics on that site are great and the layout is very imaginative, which is something kind of hard to find these days.
Tell your friend that he did a great job then launch in to the suggestions that we've made for him.

Hmmm I would do away with the red bordered tables andput them under a news section. The navigation part, looks great.
