OUTER space? dont think so, but somewhere on some fake galaxy far far away lives some fake creatures that in the middle of their star wars send w33rd signals to earth for help heheh
There might be some non-carbon based life forms even in our own galaxy - on Mars.. Some skary looking jelly fish prolly.

sure there is !!!
though not believing in god i'm sure as hell that there's a kind of intelligent lifeform out there..
wouldn't it be egoistic, that we (humans) are the only intelligent race between millions of stars/planets ??

Egoistic? How? It wouldn't be our fault...
Anyhow, as has been said over and over again, it would be quite extraordinarely improbable for us to be 'alone'.

Hmm actually, think about it.
We've existed for a long time, and think about the time before us. Several billion years. Now, think about the chances that there would be an another alien race, which accidentally would've been formed in the same era as us, which was living close enough to be encountered, developed enough to hear our messages and being able to answer to them. Think about the size of the universe. Galaxies are formed from millions of stars, and there are god knows how many galaxies out there. Of all the planets in the universe, think about the chances of the race forming in one near us.
So... To cut it short, there might be some living organisms living their life somewhere, but I really don't think we'll ever find even one of them. Space exploration is just a waste of money. Hey, I like X-Files too, but the chances are something like 1:10^600.

There is life on mars, they have found bacterias or something there, so there is "life" on other planets, but is there any intelligent life.
Call me "Fox Moulder-wannabe" if you like but I sort of belive the "greys" are here and that they are abducting people. Don't ask me way, ...actually I have a wierd theory wich I belive, but I'm not ready to share it.
But one day I'll be able to tell you all... "I told you so!" (or maybe not, since I didn't tell you)

heh by my drunk hypothesis everything repeats endlessly.. It sounds drunk but it really is drunk! hehah
look, the universe is endless so if you thought there were billions of starts you're wrong, ther's actially endless amount. Endless amount of any imaginable and unimaginable matter. The only thing is distance.. if you went far enough you would find planet similar to earth, go further and find humanoids like us, go further and find humanoid just like you, then if you keep going those unimaginable distances you'll keep meeting yourself and everythign repeats endlessly!!!!!!!

Rincewind, scientists haven't actually decided on the factors which determine life to develop. First they thought sunlight was the essential ingredient, but after sending a remote controlled mini-sub down to the deepest parts of the ocean - where it is pitch black, they discovered many unknown species thriving in the darkness. The only other element was heat from the plates shifting.
Life can also live in places of extreme heat. A scientist was recently testing the salinity of some boiling springs, much too hot for life to exist (as previously thought). Some living bacteria was in it, which was very surprising for all the scientific folks.
Another scientist found fungi growing in Antarctica (I'm getting all this info from a TV show I saw on ABC btw).
They concluded that wherever there is water, it is highly possible you will find some sort of life. Within the last few years, astronomers have been finding many planets revolving around stars. Considering Earth and Mars have had life on them (and possibly Europa), I don't see why you are so skeptical about it, Rincewind. Mars has frozen ice at its caps, Europa is a water/ice moon so what is stopping planets in other solar systems?
I agree with you that space exploration is a waste of money. Before humans leave the world we evolved on, we have some pretty heavy social issues to take care of first. I say we should wait for the age of aquarius, when we're past that, then we can conquer other worlds.
Wait...I sound like a nerd with all that text above. I'm not fanatical about space, I assure you. I just saw this show on thew other night, it provoked some thought.
Oh, and I just noticed after re-reading your post, Rincewind, you said you don't completely rule out other life. Sorry, I can get carried away a bit. I'm just a little bit confused after walking home from school in the pouring rain. I'm so cold and wet. It has been raining all day, hasn't stopped. But I like the rain when I am watching it from a dry area. Do you like the rain? |

I think cecil is an Aussie!
"well strike me pink!" as they say in the classics. (although I don't really want to know what "striking" someone "pink" actually involves.)
Anyway, I'm skeptical about the age of the universe theory. We could be just late starters. If there were a planet that just happened to have fewer (or even zero) major extinctions they could have a 100 million year head start on us. |

I think there could be. They think there could be aquatic life on a moon of Jupiter - Europa. Europa is covered in ice but they think the moon is being heated from its core, melting a lot of the water underneath. So the ice is only a shell.
They're sending a probe there in a few years that will drill through the ice then unleash a swimming probe into the ocean. It is programmed to explore areas where the temperature is highest. It will be taking pictures and transmitting them back to earth. Imagine if there is underwater cities with humanoid life-forms with fins! That would be unreal.
I'm no scientist, so sorry if my post contains lack of technical terms . |

Umm you may be right cecil... but still, note that if there is water on a planet, that doesn't automatically mean there is or has been life. The creation of life is a very complicated process. There may be someday though... Who knows? Not me.
You're right, bacteria can live in the most extreme places, (hmm I think I've seen that same show :P) but it's very difficult for REAL versatile life to develop there. It'll be real hard to evolve to something bigger and better in conditions like those.
Btw, I love those summer rains... rainbows and such... it's kinda pretty. Warm air and cool rain, it's very refreshing. But, at the moment it's raining something between snow and water here, the sky is grey and all the streets are covered in dirty snow, weathers like this always get me depressed... ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/frown.gif) |

imdaking is actially right.. =] we are just a lil atom in someone's ear or some nasty place hehe
hmm looke here first people thought cells were smallest particles then they discovered atoms, then electrons, protons neutrons and 15 years ago they found smaller particles (hmm thers a few one is called charm rest i forgot)
so if you keep studying, even if it sounds fake to you, you'll be finding smaller and smaller particles forever ! just depends on your schientific skillz and stuff
hmm so when people say everything i spossible i say YES! and its possible unlimited times with unlimited sizes and form, shape and everythign else ;o
/me goes back to da bar, drink more vodka

To tell the truth I'm not sure why were looking for intelligent life.
All the things we've done with our own intelligence prove meaningless.
The one thing we should be caring about is the Earth, our home. But for some reason we can't even do that right.
Now we want to find intelligent life out there that's like us... Whose to judge what intelligence is, why would these species think we were intelligent. So if that's the case why would they care if we find them or not.
I mean think of it like this, if we werent so god damn smart all we'd be doing is eating sleeping and having sex our whole freaking lives... |

No they didnt.
They found fossile evidence in a rock which they THINK came from Mars, which MIGHT have been formed from bacertial growth.
Thats a few too many "mights" and "maybes" for my taste.
I think the over optimists are just as bad for "the cause" as are the anti-seti people.

Its not a waste of money.
There are advantages to space exploration besides aliens you know!??!?!
Imagine fabricating metals in space....Pouring molds.
There is a company that is getting the patents and plans to create an orbital car factory.
It creates FOAM metal, which is terribly strong, yet light weight, and uses less material. There is just ONE example of the many ways to make space profitable.
There is an isotope found only on the moon which they are planning on using for a new super efficient type of nuclear fuel.
Space holds possibilities for the Human race beyond number, and thier benefits will be beyond your imaginations, even totally discounting alien contact!

But what really is money? it is a price we set for ourselves to buy materials for ourselves? so basically what are we doing? we're paying ourselves for the minirals that we have mined for ourselves, so basically we aren't wasting money, the money is OURS and is rotating throughout the world...
(and yes i believe in aliens! NEHEHEHE) |

has anyone on here ever stopped and thought if there was inteligent life on earth other then humans? life on land was sposed to begin a few 100 million years ago but life in the oceans began long before that, around 2 billion years after the creation of earth i beleive (considering the the world is 4.6 billion years old) another life form, in the deapths of the ocean, could had formed long before us and developed advance technology maybe even cities at the bottom of the deapest parts of the ocean where humans have yet to explorer. alot like the movie abyss.. hell fisher men have found giant squid in their nets but no one has yet to seen one... and the oceans are 75 % of the earth u just never know |

WARiii, the reason why intelligent life in the oceans is not present (apart from the dolphins) is because there has been no need for marine animals to evolve to that extent. Animals will only evolve if they need to. Humans do not need to evolve any more because we don't need to, we are intelligent enough to change our environment, rather than change ourselves.
Aquatic life swim, eat and breed but the conditions don't require anything more of the animals.
It's fun to think about, and I could be wrong, there could be beautiful cities with mer-people. I hope there is, that would be cool. |

The question whether theres intelligent life out there is easily answered by a mathematical quotation. A nonexistent one though.
You'd have to compare the size of the universe with the probability of life evolving out of a big bang... its that easy (lol). Cause this whole "life" thing is so fucking complicated that it wouldnt suprise me if its statistically impossible to happen twice, or more, times in the same universe. Even if the universe is endless (which it isnt)....

No-one has yet been able to define what life is, not even to prove that computer viruses aren't alive.
If you think of life as a chain of chemical reactions ( which I do ), it is of course possible that there is life elsewhere than on this rock.
Possible, I said.
P.S :
I saw an UFO once. It was a weird, comet-like thingie hovering some 500 meters above ground, going fast to the south. I was sitting in a train when I saw it, and it went into an almost parallel direction for about an hour. It gradually dissappeared behind the horizon.
whatever..

Scientists believe that it would almost be IMPOSSIBLE for there NOT to be life anywhere else. There is an equation that gives a rough idea of approximately how many planets have the ability to produce intelligent life (theoretically), and it's in the neighbourhood of 10,000.
I forget all the deatils, it's been a while since I took astronomy.

im asuming that u mean in this galaxy other wise that would be silly because in a infinate universe there r a infinate amount of planets and thus there is a infinate probibility that there is other life (unless u take the god type side of things) however there is also a infinate amount of space thus the chances of us running into each other r infinately small or on the other hand infinately large...ah fuck it infinaty does my nut!
im of down the pub..cider study is far more intersting :P
