Well I decided that instead of constantly drawing faces that looked wrong, that I'd use a reference. I found a black and white photo of Kristen Dunst on the web and figured I'd use that. This isn't just colored in. Its a total repaint. A few of my friends asked about that. I know there is something wrong with this but I can't put my finger on it. Any help with this would be great. Obviously mine is in color and the ref. is in BW. So there's some obvious differences. Colors are strange and the hair looks flat but other than that, i just can't figure it out.

Dunno if the ref. pic will work, what with geocities being a total pain lately.
I guess you'll have to cut and paste for the ref. pic. Sorry.

The neck is the only thing I notice that stands out. It seems too thick, and too separate from everything else. It should blend in more with the jaw line. Hiding it with the hair like the original might be easier, though. |

I don't have a problem with the neck. I think, apart from a small problem with the mouth, that it looks great! I think the the 'widow's peak' of the top lip (can't remember the actual name of it) is too far to our left. If it were more centered, it might remove the the slight 'sneer' effect from the other side of the mouth. Hope that makes sense.

Tremor: Yeah I guess it does stand out a bit. I think I need to make it a bit darker. And the reason I hadn't drawn the hair thats there is because it is such a pain in my ass to do hair. I think I'm going to have to do that though.
Eric: You're right, now that I take another look at it. It does seem slightly spread. I have no clue what thats called though.
I think in general I need to tone done the brightness too. The shading is off slightly too. If anyone has any other comments, it would be great to hear them. Thanks to those who did reply. |

I don't think the neck needs to be darker.. if anything, it needs to be lighter so it blends in more with the face.. also, you might want to give more of an impression of the muscles in the neck, even just subtly, just to give it more dimension.. you can probably get away without doing the hair there if you can just blend the neck in more. Other than that, I really like it (and I like the mouth, personally) |

DirtyDigger: You sure its the philtrum cause I thought that was something else. Dunno what though, just not that mouth thing.
TremorX: I guess its not that the neck needs to be darkened, just that the jaw line stands out too much.
Thanks so far, I'll put up an update soon. These tips have been great. Keep'em comin though. |
