a few quick proprotional things. Here is how you should set up your proportions (divided into 8 heads):

That's the basics for the proportions. There are also some other issues that you need to work with, such as dimensions (angles and such), but I don't have the time to get into that at this moment.
Core elements of light/shadow:
Highlight
Light
Half-tones
Core Shadow
Reflected Light
Cast Shadow
Those are the different tones that you need to deal with. If you could add in the half-tone between the light and the shadow, it would add more depth probably.
Here's how you know if something should be in light or shadow: Figure out where your light source is. Once you have that, think about the light like this: Where it skims the surface of the object, it goes into half-tones and core shadow. I understand that you have no 3 dimensional reference for this, but visualize it.
