I've recently been trying my hand at Painter after years of being a Photoshop person. Here's a practice painting-in-progress. Crits are welcome.

I like it, but the shadows seem a bit odd. The highlight on the cheek makes it seem like there is a strong light hitting from the side, yet the nose is really dark. Who knows, maybe I'm looking wrong.

Nice lines, the hard ones are hard and the soft, soft. Great shading, definately gives it some kick ass depth.

I recommend you have them both. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Photoshop has an advantage in that in has layers, while Painter is flat (tho I've heard rumors that Painter 6 may have layers, I dunno), and it really is the ultimate art program, as far as I'm confirmed. I'm sure when I'm done with this piece I'll still prob. go into Photo and touch it up some. Painter is still incredible when it comes to painting however, it's paintbrush is much better than Photo's. It seems as though Painter was more built with artists in mind. What it all comes down to, I guess, is the requirements of the job and your preference.

I really like this piece... has loads of potential. There's a Russian statue feel about it.

Cool!
