...but I just felt like posting this sketch I just did, don't know why... I usually don't show off any sketches here. I think I just had to post this now before I do something stupid like I usually do and muck an image up with useless or poorly done details. I think I already went too far with it but I'm nearly happy with the way it turned out.

Self crits would have to be the length of her left arm and the size of her hand...both should be increased because the wrist isn't anywhere near the same level as her crotch as it should be. Also, the bow isn't quite what it should be, that I'll fix if I paint this. There're some other minor things to tweak but I really liked the upper body area myself...almost stopped right there. I kinda liked the simplicity of the hair when I'd normally try and draw every strand...anybody have thoughts on this?

Anyway, does anybody think I should give a go at painting this thing? Also, does anybody have anything else to say about the drawing technically as well as asthetically?

Well, enough of my stupid banter, here's the image, crit away please:

...and her right foot (on our left) is pretty long. But she's nice, finish it!

I was just searching for that other archer sketch you (AFAIK) once posted to help somebody to get a more realistic archer pose. I didn't find that on your webpage or in the archives; so could you post a link to it?

Looks really good to me. Can't see many flaws. I wonder for what you are excusing yourself... the only thing that bugs me is her breasts. If they are in that armor (leather, I guess) they would be rounder like CrakBEENie already said... you actually draw the armor not the breasts.

I know.. grammars wrong... hope you get my point

Oooo, replies

Flinthawk: oh wait, that's me, heh

CrakBEENie: cool, glad you liked the face, it's one of the things I was happiest about when I first laid the pencil to the paper. I'll go ahead and fix up those breasts to look more like they're in armor and I'm thinking that despite some other projects on hand I may have to paint this thing. (BTW, if anybody wants to do their own job on it go ahead. I know it's not inked or very clean but I like painting over all my lines instead of coloring line work in general anyway)

Jaymo: heh, damn, and that's after shortening it once already. It is still pretty long, consider it fixed. Oh, here's a link to the image I believe you're talking about... http://www.geocities.com/flinthawke/HawkeSketch.jpg What's AFAIK mean? Anyway, there's the link

S4Sb: coo, coo, understand you perfectly. Like I told CrakBEENie, I'll fix that chest thing up a bit, probably when I get to painting it.

Thanks for the crits all, keep 'em coming.

those are pointy nipples alright. is she that cold? she should put on a jacket.

anyways make sure the elbows come down to the waist and the hands a litle farther down the thigh.. I think thats whats throwing it off. other than that great job!!

That kicks ass my friend. .. I agree, the arms need a little length. Someone told me a good rule of thumb is the elbow hits just above the waist. Works for me. As far as the tits go, well if thats your style, stick with it.
QUIT being so hard on yourself.. You do some rrrreeeaaalll good work.

Just a style judgment here but maybe a little more hips. She is very boyish in build but young girls are. If she is late teens though, she does need more meat there.
Just an opinion.

I really like it... especially the expression. The only thing that really stuck out to me was that the hips needed to be a little bit bigger to match her body frame... I dunno. Maybe I am wrong... just looked that way.

Anyhow.. I love your work ;]

v1510nAry: cool, I have a few things in mind that'll fix up that scabbard. Not sure what you mean by fringe...maybe you mean her bangs are too big, the cuffs of her boots, or the bottom of her tunic. Yeah, either one of those are bigger than they'd normally be but I kinda like it that way

Awetopsy: Hey, they're not pointy, they're just uhh, perky I've fixed that though. Yeah, I noticed the arm length thing right away...I tend to go by the elbow coming down to the bottom of the ribcage and the wrist to the crotch level (of course, ever so slightly higher in this case to account for her shoulder tilt). I fixed that problem, too.

Convenant: Thanks for the critiques and the compliments. I always tend to be hard on myself to keep my innate 'artist ego' in line ;p...that and it helps me keep improving from piece to piece.

Seeg: Hey Seeg, you're actually right there. The design called for her to be in the very late teens but she's also a Ranger who has grown up in the country so I tried to keep her rather slim. After reading your comment about the hips I compared them to the shoulders and I can see that they do indeed need a little more width. Thanks for pointing that out.

Ivey: Hey Ivey, glad you like my work Means I must be doing something right. I think my style's come a long way from the anime look I started out with. And no, like I told Seeg, I think you're both right about the hips when compared to the rest of her frame.

Jaymo: Glad I can help. Thanks for the links, too. There're a few net chat things I've never even seen in that list.

Awesome feedback so far, I had already corrected a few of the things mentioned in a few minutes but then Seeg and Ivey pointed something else out so I'm gunna hold off and correct that before I post an update. In the meantime, maybe you all would care to see the low poly model I actually started on before I did this sketch. Here're some renders after a couple hours' work. I'm into tweaking it now.

Crit away if you like, I'll be trying to post an updated sketch before I go away for the weekend.

Ok, on my way out the door but I managed to get a few minutes to correct a few things, hopefully I'm pretty close on this stuff. Lemme know what you guys think now. Without further ado...

Ey! Flinthawk!, whats up ?!

I like how you are rendering the belt and sword in your last step.

The drawing has won quality and so, but I keep on thinking that it needed a better pose (she feels too "sticky")

The low poly seems interesting, but with such a simple mesh ya knows that textures are everything.
Do you have in mind texture her?
Im just a begginer in 3D. Im learning 3D Studio Max right now.
Hope to post something soon...

Meanwhile I have uploaded a new image:

Your comments will be welcome as ever.

See ya!

And keep on working hard!

Nice improvements! Only her breast does look a bit more lopsided now, IMO. But since this is sketch work i don't think it needs any more tweaking. Maybe do a painting of her in an atmospheric environment...

Nice loPoly-meshes! Maybe show some wireframes, too, next time.

Looking forward to see more stuff from you.

Whoa, it's been a looooong weekend for me.

poe_a2g: is there anything wrong with having a thread dedicated to her breasts?

Sempere: Hey Sempere, where've you been? As for the pose, do you mean a little too stiff? Hmmm, maybe, but I'll rationalize it by saying she's standing with her back to a stiff wind. Maybe the eventual painting will get a little looser with the pose. I'm working on the textures for her model right now. Once I get those I'll be animating her as well...a little character modeling to start rounding out my portfolio. Every company that looks at my stuff immediately asks to see my character work and, well, I have only one low-poly character right now and I can do ten times better than that one now...need to update to keep up with my improvement. Oh, and did you try and upload something in your reply? I think you forgot to include it

Jaymo: Glad you like the tweaks, and yes, I'm hoping to do paint her up in some cool environment, still deciding exactly what kind though...it'll have to be windy, maybe a mountain top of cliff. I'll remember to include some wireframes next time I update, too. Hopefully I won't swamp myself with extra projects from work here that I don't get around to this project.

*looks around to see if anybody's looking*...*bump*

heh, just bumping since my updated sketch wasn't up for long before geocities cracked down on linking. Further crits are welcome as always

(yes, I still need to work on that chest...it bothers me now that I added the designs in her tunic, somehow makes her look lop-sided)
