Hi,
Having used Photoshop for ages I was reasonably happy with the results but on seeing afew tutorials on the web using Painter, I thought I'd give it a go. I tried Painter classic for a while but got fed up with it's limitations so took the plunge and got Painter 6. Here's my first major piece using that - it's nearly there, just some small touches to add.
Would other fish be overkill or should I leave it clean and simple?? The original file is 3000 x 4555 so there's plenty of scope for detailed fishies.
Please give me your comments.

Leave it as it. People have too much of a tendency in water and space scenes to cram them with detail, when it reality it should be pretty sparse. Besides, Fish run like hell when dolphins are around.
Does anyone know if Painter 6 is significantly better than 5.5? I have 5.5, but the clunky interface prevents me from using it as much as I'd like.

Beautiful work Oli_D. I think less is more in this case.
LordArioch-
Painter 6 is a major upgrade. It finally goes to the layer standards we're all familiar with. Interface still fairly weird compared to Pshop, but better and more options. By setting up your own expandable custom palette of brushes, paper, etc. you can successfully hide almost all the control toolboxes/palettes - meaning a lot more screen real estate. The new computed brushes in ver 6 (like scratchboard pen tool)are very fast, much faster than the standard "dab" brushes which a lot of people have lag problems with. (It's been optimized for Pentium III - I run it on NT4 and have very few lag problems anyway.)Airbrushes have been updated and are much more realistic. One of the biggies is the "minimum" brush size. Example - set the minimum size to 1 pixel - regular size to 35 or bigger; with your pressure-sensitive Wacom you can now REALLY draw closer to a real paintbrush or pencil - as you increase pressure the width of your stroke increases just like you think it should....doh! Also much better text support.
Don Seegmiller says it's a must-buy upgrade - I'd agree.

Gorgeous work. I love dolphins to begin with.
It looks pretty finished to me. What else you gonna add?

Don Seegmiller still says that it is a must buy upgrade. I do not think that there is anything out there to compare for image creation. I do have a few tutorials on my site if you are interested.
The dolphins are good as they are. Keep stroking with Painter and let me know if I can answer any questions.

Painter 6 is indeed a must-buy.
Cool new stuff I can't live without:
1) Revamped brush engine with lots more control and customizing. Finally I can get something close to what I'm used to painting with.
2) Less crashes than 5.5 and...
3) they finally, as mentioned in previous posts, implemented layers.
The layers still kinda goofy though, especially with brushes that smear (since they tend to treat the clear area on a layer as white and NOT the color in the background --anyone else have problems with this?) but they're still invaluable.
I still use PS, but not for painting anymore. Only for coloring line art, color correction and photo editing. PS still has FAR superior masking tools that I need for work. But when it's me just cutting loose... it's Painter all the way now.

You know, if you wanted to post the links to those Painter tutorials, I wouldn't complain.
And I agree with Munky, throw some other schooling fish around the dolphins. An excellent opportunity to mess with our planar senses. It being underwater and all.

Thanks a lot for your comments - really appreciated!!
For Rattmouth, and anyone else who's interested, the tutorials I've been looking at are here. You may already have seen them all think them pretty basic, but they got me started.
Lunatique, I'm going to add a few subtle lighting effects on the dolphins backs to reflect the rays of light and dappling of light on surface. This could be dangerous so I'll be sure to keep this as a backup if it all goes pear shaped.
Thanks again

Wow, that's a great start... and a double thumbs up for the ripples in the water on the surface ! :)
