Third post. And an image once again. Sadly no one criticized my first two, so I just assume they are perfect the way they are (jk). Anyway here is a face I had been working on for quite some time. It is getting closer to completion but something's wrong, and I just don't have a clue what. Any crits at all? post em please.

changed image to link, for all you modem users

thanks

GREAT EYES..they look really good - how did you do that?

The eyses are so detailed but not the rest of her face...that doesnt match that good + dont like the eyebrows make them thinner =)

I'm no expert and I'm just going to slap down what I see wrong. I'm not trying to be mean, just stating what I saw when I first looked at it.

hair too red
eyebrows too 'hairy/bushy'
shading under nose too much
nostrils too close together
splotchy face
eyes are sharp and face is blurry

I can tell you're really trying though. You just need to refine your technique on shading and midtone for the most part, I think (maybe scope out some tutorials on some people heres webpages). Your choice of colors needs to be refined also. In general I think you're heading in the right direction though!

The light source is all over the place. You need a good simple light source. The features on the face could use some work. Study from life or photography.

Harsh crit?

Allright. It looks like a mutant.

Too 'dirty'. No set light source. Hair too blocky.

looks like the nose is tilted up to far for the direction the rest of the face is facing. you need to work on the shading alot. Imagine a single lightsource and draw shadows opposite to that source.

IMO anyways.

She looks very surprised with those eyes. It seems that you use dodge/burn too much. Try building shadows with color. In real life few shadows are made with black. Burn just makes most things look burnt.

thanks for all your crits so far. I tried to work with them... (removed the face color, you're right is sucks. As for the hair. It is supposed to be that bright.)

ah well so that's what I came up with:

Another Image converted to a link for you modem users - face_02

as for shading (and various light sources) I also tried to get that done in some sort of diagram. Can anyone help me out now? It shows the shading of the face but I cant make out what's wrong.

And another converted one. face_02-lines

thanks again

basically your diagram looks pretty good on the light source. I think your biggest problem is your shading and highlights. Its not smoth. What I mean by that is that is not equally placed thru out the face. It looks like she has splotches of something all over her face. Like shes kind of dirty. My suggestion (im pretty new at this but it could help) is to start out with a lighter or darker version of the color you are using to make the shadows. Start with the weakest first then add your darkers later. Make sure your colors arnt just one really dark one and one really light one and just try painting with you pens preasure cause its pretty hard to color smothly like that. Im not sure if I explained myself right cause its making sence in my head while I type lol. Well hope that helps.

In the eyes, the pupils look way too big for the eye, and also maybe the eye lid should have a shadow under it to give it depth from the eye itself. That's just for the eye...

bumpity bump

Reviving that one here ;.)

Did a little smoothing trying to remove the "splotchiness" as you suggested. Still I'm not that happy with it. I removed all colors for now because they somehow all looked odd now.

Also fiddled a little with the nose and the upper lip. What else... Made the eyebrows a little thinner and removed the eyelashes, becuase they also looked odd. Is there a good way to paint proper EYE-LASHES? Mine seemed to look like they were glued on.

I would be glad if someone could do a little paintover to show me what's wrong. Oh and could you gimme your ideas on the hair? I have huge trouble painting hair, and I well... just wanted to hear what you think about it so far.

ah well here's the link to the picture (too many and too big images)
