Hi,
long time since I posted something, so I thought I'd post a work-in-progress cover painting I'm working on these days. And yes, it's another one for Conan magazine (probably a Red Sonja book), hence the subject matter (heh!). What can I say, it's fun to draw.

I am going to submit it to the editor tomorrow so I would really appreciate some help from you guys here, tell me what you like and don't, maybe this and that looks odd or something, there's possibly a few things here and there I may have forgotten about and so on. Or should I leave it as is? I don't know. Some areas are still rough, but that's partly because the editor wanted me to change a few things, and I'm working on those right now. No time for any big major changes but any comments and crits are welcome.

i think its amazing.. but if i wanted to give someone a hard time about the image id say the shading on her left bicep is strange, her stumache goes from a nice smooth shading to a more harsh blocky shading.. and the color on her stomache seems to be diffrent from her body. hope im being helpful..

GOSH! I positively love the style!!!

I don't want to criticize such an impressive work but if you really want it...
The shadows of her breast might be a bit too large or dark.
You could add some backlighting on her left hip like on her thigh...

I think i'll just sit here and cry a moment, *sob* *sob*, excuse me *sob*...

I tend to agree withthe Dude.. I had troubles too with the left leg but hey, that's a tiny O so tiny remark ;p. She's Gorgeous !

If it's Red Sonja, her haid could stand to be more red. I'd kill the highlights on her breasts and add more of a glimmer to her eyes - that way you'd be more drawn to her face instead of her breasts. Her left arm is a tad off anatomically(shoulder seems really uncomfortable). I like the background a lot. Nice colors.

I'd put some highlights on the bottom of her left leg (her left, viewers right)where it is hidden in the shadows. You don't need too much, just enough to make it look like her nickname isn't "Stumpy". Also, the bottom half of the same leg looks a little short compared to the one she is standing on. Hope you don't mind, I did a little retouching to show you what I mean about the lighting. It's not much, just enough to show that there is a leg back there.

the ONLY thing you MIGHT want to alter is her stomach. It looks like you used the smudge tool just a little too much, try making the stomach muscles more defined

This picture is great as well. Very stylish, and great atmoshere. Am I wrong when I say it looks like you spent quite a bit of time on the breasts? They just look very smooth... (although her left nipple doesn;t look as large as her right.)

I agreee with the critism on the stomach. The shadow colour seems too black...almost like shes got soot rubbed on her. Also, I'm not familiar with the Red Sonya character, but the face looks slighty cartoony. I think maybe the eyes are a bit far apart? Or maybe I don't think. I'm just being picky. This is a very nice picture.

Thanks for all the replies so far!

This is what really makes this forum great. Lots of good suggestions and pointers. Things that I haven't been able see at all after working on it for too long. I have fixed several things now (taking a lot of your suggestions into account), but there's still a few more I have to fix. Allthough right now, I am just too tired (and I have run out of espresso) so I have to call it a night. I'll try and give better replies to all of your comments tomorrow.

Quite frankly...I like it...very much so.

Q- the dodge and burn is obvious on the stomach area, but with the thighs etc, how'd you get the natural blend there? (i'm a PS novice)

I'm quite surprised no one mentioned that there is a visible band of light on the background which is ... less odvious on the female's body.

christer, this is a very nice looking picture.

I would tone down the highlights on the legs just a bit. The sun(?) is coming from such an extreme angle that those highlights aren't justified. Her left arm would probably also cast a nice shadow across her left leg and belly. The shadow under her left breast flattens out the stomach. The shadow should follow the true form of the stomach better. Also points about the greyness of the belly have already been said. Abit more color where light hits dark would fix that I think and a bit more highlight would be cool also. Just a few quick points about what you could correct.

There are so many strong elements in this picture that I won't even start mentioning them.....

Please remember to post the final picture. Its already great, and I really want to see how it turned out in the end.

Nothing to add to the critics done. I agree mostly with the stomach stuff, but I wouldn't have notice it if no one has pointed at it.

Marvelous work indeed. I really like the texture of your coloring ( the sword is awesome, seems like raw metal ) and of course she's wonderful. The stance is excellent too! If it was possible, this picture would have finished as a poster on my living room wall!!!

speaking of which, does anyone know if there are places anywhere (just if they exist not geographically) that you can go to with your image and they'll print it out on a bigass glossy poster so's it'll look professional and all that?

It'd be kinda cool to actually have your own art like that... or others...

Which could start a new kind of forum, poster posting =) You post images that are poster size, that you can just download to a disk and then go to one of these places and make a poster for your wall out of...

something I'd like to see anyways.

I'm in contact with a guy named Mike Malloy, website here http://www.mindandmachine.com/ He sells 2 feet by 3 feet prints. Apparently and as I know those printers, it looks really cool but I haven't tried yet. I'm waiting till I've finished new picts .. I'll keep you posted if you want. I know it's in the US but it would anyway be a good start to know if these kinds of printers run well...

Yes, we have a specialized shop here (Lyon, France) that do this kind of stuff. The price depends on the size of the file to print and the quality of the paper.

the prices are not overrated, which is a good point !

Hmmz, returner pointed out that you can use an A3 printer... but I'm thinking MUCH bigger then that... like really really big posters... say... 1-1� meters wide and like 1�-2 meters high... and printed on really high quality gloss paper with a gazillion smurfy colours... so's it's like a real poster that you'd pick up from a store...
returner: I'll look around sweden for one of those, 'n post it somewhere around here if I find one =)

Anyone know how long an inch and a... foot (?) is? I mean 2 feet wide doesn't really spark my bell

(sorry for being an ig'nant swede

)

Im sure strata that there must be some specialized shops in stockholm or in goteborg that have all the necessary equipment for producing homemade posters, just keep searching!

And to the problem concerning different length measurements there is a very simple solution. You just download the online translator program called babylon at www.babylon.com. Its a terrific program...if you dont have it..download it rightaway!!!!
It doesnt only handle words good, but also money values and measurements.
Well thats the tip of today ;-)
