As the hive mind slowly invades my thoughts, I found myself doing this:
It was done by starting on a black background and just starting to paint. Some of what I now know is hard are the very dark areas. How do you guys handle these ? Also some stuff on the faceplate around the eyes needs to be fixed, but apart from that I'm quite happy with it. Any crits or pointers ?

Well, generally avoid starting with black. Unless in Painter you do a black wash with the water color tool-then you can get some neat effects. Otherwise, maybe a gradient, even if it's subtle. I would suggest a more obvious light source. A bit more contrast in the figure itself ya know. Are the eyes glowing? Because they're both the same tone. Also, why does something like that need a gun!?! He looks ready to chow down!

I see what you mean with the highlights. It's supposed to be suddently emerging from the dark, and I guess that also suggests a very bright and directional light.
I wanted the eyes to be glowing, but that may have been a mistake.
It has a gun, so it can shoot you full of small disgusting burrower worms. It's a creature from a tabletop game, and these have guns. They are the smallest and least scary of the species |

I like it! Sharpen the details, and you could be on to a winner, there.
Go, 'nids, go!

"The Generation Gap"? Heheh.
Good to see people still interested in 40K. |

Hehe, yeah, I did that pic largely to explain the whole generation thing to someone. Mind you, the dolt still didn't get it.
I haven't actually had much of anything to do with Games Workshop for, ooh, at least 5 years now. Prior to that, though, I was addicted for a straight decade. The old stuff is still good subject matter. The newer stuff totally lost it, went the 'emulate as many cool things as we can to capture the huge teenaged brats audience' route, and I completely lost interest.
*sigh*
Oh, for the good old days of Rogue Trader. |

Twisted: I know just what you mean. I bought my Rouge Trader along with WD 99 and 100, so that's a few days ago.
GW seems to be moving in a better direction these days anyways. There is much focus on conversion, scratchbuilding and general "do-your-own-stuff" again, just like in the old days. And I just sooo love the new tyranid minis released with the new codex this week.
Ok, here is a new version. I tried to define the light a lot more, and make the caprapace shine instead of dull..is that working at all ? I also dropped the glowing eyes. Just a stupid idea.
I tried to add slime coming from the barrel of the bio weapon. Does that look like slime at all ?? Never tried anything like that at all...

Ooh, I like the lighting on this new version much more. Yeah, the eyes have definately improved.
The slime's looking good. You might try giving it a slight greenish yellowy tint? Not thick and snotty, mind you, just a slight hint of colour.

I really like the second one alot more. I think if you look a bit at the lef side (or the creatures right side) you will see that its blurry. It kind of throws of the sharp highlighted right side when you see that blurry shadowed left side. Fix up the left side and it will be awsome =).

The second version looks cool. The lighting makes it look much better.
