This is a pretty boring shading/anatomy thing I drew just to learn... not a hoot to look at, but if someone could just tell me if I've done something wrong with either two things that'd be great.
thanks

The ears are too high. Their bottom must be the same as the nose's.
And the eyes are too high too. They must me in midway between the cap of the skull and the bottom of the chin. |

I agree bout the ears. But the eyes should stay where they are. But I would leave the eyes where they are. I never drew anybody who had the eyes really in the middle. It's just a very rough rule for beginners.

eyes on the line halfway from the top of the head to the bottom of the chin. part the line in 5 equal parts, and #2 and #4 are your space for the eyes. draw a ~45 line in the middle of each eye-space, the inner side should be up. now you draw your eyes, and the eye is the widest where the line crosses the 45 line. now do the brows, a bit above (there's no rule for that, i think - depends on the mood of your model, too).
now take the brows and the chin, and halfway between is the bottom of the nose.
between the bottom of the nose and then chin, on 1/3 of the way down is the line of the mouth. the mouth is as wide as the pupils are apart. did i forget anything? ah yes, the ears. highest point is brow line, lowest is bottom of the nose. make the chin a bit wider for very male characters.
chinline meets ears.

I happen to like the 1/2 way rule.
also your neck is really very thick... kinda throws it off.. The top of the head is a bit too oval... the ears and eyes should line up
and the corners of the jaw should line up with the mouth (roughly) not the nose.
you should be able to see what I mean by my reference pic...
hope it helps you a bit.
[edit]Oh yeah, the shading is good. actaully its very well done.
[edit] hmm looking at it I see that horizontally the features line up very nicely... the corners of the mouth are lined up with the eyes.. thats good.
keep it up

Wait no longer awetopsy =)
I followed your guide and lowered the ears/cheekbones and made the top of the skulle less coneheaded =)
new version can be found at: www.alienphobia.com/strata/man2.jpg
thanks for the help, it's invaluable =) |

As far as the structure goes, the first post took care of that. As for the shading get rid of your edges on the underside of the chin but keep some reflected light in order to keep the impression of some mass. Also I'd just make the shading more dynamic and contrasting |

duck: reflecting light on the left/under side of the jawline? Wouldn't that require a second light source?
I'll work some more on the shading, but it's kind of hard to get exciting shading like that with a stomph imho, I'll try to get some more variations tho, thanks |

alright i'm going to ty again. my english is bad, but my advice wasn't. Here's an illustration:
(hope this works.)
Alright, as I said in the first post, make an ellipsoid/egg-shape with the thicker part up. divide it in half, both vertically and horizontally. the horizontal line is the line of your eyes. you divide it in 5 equal parts and use #2 and #4 for the eyes. as shwon in the detail, use a ~45 line to determine where the slope of the eyelids is farthest from the eye line. make the upper lid a bit higher. now as for the shading, look at this next pic (damn, this helping thing gets outta hand )
alright this is a color pic but that shouldnt matter. pay attention to details, like the third eyelid on the inner side of the eye (which i kinda neglected here, but it's in the first pic ), and the correct shading of the eyeball. don't forget the shadow the lid casts on the eyeball and the iris. use some convincing shape for light source reflection in the iris. The lids are shaded pretty much like in this picture: the upper lid gets darker to both sides, and is lightest in the middle. If you want to make eyelashes, don't put them on the edge, but a bit into the flesh, so to speak.
The lower lid is where i screwed up in this pic. there are two sides to it, the upper of which is very light, and without much variation in lightness; the lower is shaded like I did with the upper side in this pic, getting lighter the nearer you get to the nose. i hope you could understand that because *I* lost it somewhere in the middle.
Anyway, the brow should be somewhere above, and the part between brow and eye is dark, naturally (but only if the light is coming from above! - which it usually does, though). Dont make the brow equally strong everywhere. it gets lighter on the outside, and there's a darkest spot somewhere close to the nose.
Alright, to continue with the rest of the shading: your cheekbones are much too accented. check on your lips too, and compare them to mine. the nose was very good in your pic.
There's no shadow on the skull on the light sight, as you drew it.
Your neck is very flat. You can think of the neck as a cylinder, and treat it as such in shading.
Alright, i hope this has been of more help than my first post, and i hope you caught my drift this time

Oh!
Fantabulous wayfinder =)
I'll work even more on it then =)
I hadn't really worked at all on the neck, just put it there so the actual head wouldn't look all dumb. =)
Nice to see people go out of their way to help another person! Especially if they're willing to write MOO! On their help images ;D
Thanks alot |

And yet another installment...
I tried to add some more dynamic shading, and those white lines you guys were talking about and stuff...
personally I think I butchered the entire thing, but that's just me.

Promise I won't bother you guys any more with this
thanks

the subtle backlight is really nice.. I dont think you butchered it. I think you did a good job. I like the eyes.. they look better.
the whole feel of the pic is better now...
excellent job |
