Bah! I just got a great comment from skyediver about this piece, in it's "layout" form (earlier topic post). The guy in the middle/front, with arms outstretched, has arms and hands far too large for the rest of his body. ACK! I think it's one of those tendencies I have while drawing, that I'll miss, if I don't pay close attention.
Bleah Well... please let me know what you think of the color. I don't think it did my sketch justice, but color is a weakness of mine. Any comments could help a great deal... but I fear this will be approved as is... it's already submitted, and will probably pass for publication, which means any improvements I make on it from here on out, will be too late. Bah! I can't believe this... I'm actually hoping that I don't pass the final submission!
We'll see right? Oh yeah... I was gonna post an image, right ok... here it is:
All thoughts more than welcome.

I'm still hooked on the guy laughing(?)
I just love the emotion his face conveys... or rather... I'm not sure wether he's laughing because the person with the outstretched arms is saying something redicuolous or if it's because he just remembered that he forgot to buy eggs...
I still say it feels sort of Simon The Sourcer'ish tho =)
Only problem I have with picture is the old woman on the far right. Her eyes look really sunken in or something... sumthin's not right with they eybrows I think... and the guy next to her looks like a fisherman but that's besides the point.
It's fantabulous =) |

Yep, the guy laughing is doing so, due to the moronic heated blunderings of the fella in purple.
The fact that the old woman's eyes seem sunken is probably due to the fact that detail is lost in this small version of the final... but it's something I plan to ammend.
I've written the A.D. another email, asking him not to approve this version, because I need to make some important changes. The guy in purple is definitely one. I'll try to convey the woman better. The "fisherman" to her left (our right), is a "crazy uncle" figure. It's apparent that I have some serious changes to make. I might be doing an overhaul more than a change or two. I painted most of this way beyond my bedtime tonight.
Bleah. Thanks again for the ridiculously helpful comments, strata. I really appreciate it. I'll post the ammended image here, when it's done (I'm guessing either Friday night or Sunday).

Another little comment if I may...
I don't really get the impression that these people are from the same era...
to explain: To the left there are robed people who seem almost religious, or gypsy or farmer like... behind them are two sort of fantasy leather wearing warriors (I think, but I'm probably wrong), and then the old woman wearing what looks like a rather posh 1700's dress with big shoulder muffs and stuff... and then there's a fisherman
Just a little thing you probably shouldn't take into consideration since it would mean altering the whole pic just to please lil' 'ole me =)
I still say it's a fantastic composition and craftsmanship though, can't wait for the revised version.
Ooooh goody goody, oh yeah as usual; not that I'm an expert on anything and what do I really know about it? |

So what's a campfire doing in broad daylight? Don't know if there's much else to say cept for that it's looking good. You may want to try to add more texture to clothes, dirt, etc. and change the way the sun and fire cast light on them. |

i absolutely love this piece... the feeling is very consuming... makes me feel like i'm there listening to what the man in the middle is saying... i have never used painter ... color is one of my stronger weaknesses too ... i saw the uncolored version of this and thought it was nice.. but the color has brought a warmer feeling to it... nice job!

Thanks everyone! All of your comments are sound.. and I find myself really wishing that this painting weren't approved... but the fact is, it's approved "As Is."
I just got off the phone with the A.D. of the magazine (should I tell you which?), and it was hilarious, because every point you've all made, I agreed with, and mentioned to him... saying that I should rework it over the weekend. You know what? He defended the existing integrity of everything I brought up! It was hilarious! He was defending MY work, from ME! Isn't that hilarious!?
Anyway... this is what's gonna hit print. As is. I'm on the verge of spilling out who it's for. For now, I'll say that if you visit my homepage, and check in the "What's New?" section... you'll soon find out who. He asked me if I'm available for another job for the following issue. I said, "of course!"
You see, as far as this painting goes, it's a tongue-in-cheek look at a group of people brought together, from all walks of life, under one unified mission... so he said things like my 'exaggeration' of the guy in purple simply restates the feeling he was looking for in the first place.
I was also concerned about the old lady, looking like she was some 1700's spinster hussie, and told him my concern, right from the get-go... he saw no problem with it then, when she was a sketch as a character portrait (the assignment was 10 paintings -- a character portrait of each individual, then one group meeting). Gimme a few days, and I'll provide a link to those images... a page I created for the A.D.'s eyes only, and respective links to printable files of each.
After you've seen each individual portrait, the overall feel should seem more legitimate
Well, anyway... thanks for all the comments, but it looks like none of them will be integrated into the painting before it's production... but they are things that apply to my growth, and maybe I won't overlook so many problems on my next piece. I may make the ammendments, if only to satisfy myself, and to show here. We'll see, eh? Thanks again, everyone! If you still have something to say, let er rip! I'm definitely up to it!

Well it may be a little more unnessesary work then what you want to do, but I for one would like to see the changes we mentioned made =) Just to see how it COULD turn out... it'd be pretty cool... plus you could send it to the AD and say: Hey, look what you could've gotten! *insert evil laugh*
Anyways, congrats on getting it aproved, even though there may not have been much doubt, it's always good to get that kind of positive respons on your pieces.
Excellent art anyhow feeb =) |

Update!!
Got the following email from the magazine's A.D.
quote: "I'll be here if you really want to redo it. I think he's fine, but it's
your name on it. So if you're uncomfortable with it, take the weekend and
get me something on Monday or Tuesday. That will be fine."
...Looks like I'll get to make those changes after all!!

That was nicely put/thought... even though it's not for you it's your rep, so it's nice of them to give you some slack.
and WE will get to see the revised pic which is equally groovy
good luck feeb =)
(god it's early in the morning... *yawn*) |
