I've been working on this for a couple hours and I'm sick of looking at myself.

Been having problems with my eyes (the mirror's a bit far away from my face and I need glasses to see some more detail. Hrmm) Anyway, input please Color is a bit off too.

Bah. Self-portraits went out with the forum change-over.

It looks like a good start. Anatomically speaking, the main part that doesn't look quite right is your neck. It's probably mostly in the shading, but check your negative spaces around it too. Your eyes also seem a bit small, and not quite symmetrical. And your ear isn't finished.

I would take a break and get the color right, then go back and work out the details. But for the most part the anatomy looks good.

But now I'm going to have to do a self-portrait too. Damn you.

Snake:

It's pretty stiff. As Waylon said, anatomy seems fine... but there is very little life to it! *I'm frank, nice to meet you*

When I look at this pic, I'm immediately reminded of old cg. What I mean, is that it looks like an old computer graphic, with no anti aliasing, flat colors, then sorta smeared over with a digital smear brush. No real design here, snake, and the boxy shape in the background ads to the stiffness of this piece. The lighting is pretty dull, too. Try to have an area of focus, and a little drama in the lighting. Your head here is not unlike a cylinder with one source of light... all browns... no real color.

Ah, what the hey... I can't do this in words. Here... I goofed with it a bit to give you one idea of how to make future self portraits less "stiff" and boring in colors. Does this help?

Self Portraits will always be cool in my books
I agree with the others on what they said about your pic. If you fix it up, post up so we can see

hey, nice to see you are doing this kind of stuff Snake. Giving yourself more challenges. I agree to everything feebsaint and waylon said..except for that the anatomy seem right, maybe the eyes could be a bit more alligned and the back of the skull could go further down back because of the angle, I don't know ?!? But, other than that, I can really see that it looks like you, and that's very good. That's always one of the bigger challenges when doing portraits.

waylon - Yes, eyes and neck suck. I'll try to change that. Go ahead and do one yourself

feebsaint - Thanks for the paintover But I have a hard time figuring out where blue's coming from, since my basement is comprised of only one neon light source, and shelves in the back I guess I can use good old imagination muscle to create or invent stuff. Though colors are very bland and edges are a bit too hard at some places. I'll post a workout soon, after I inject a couple more hours into the drawing. For once, my face is way too bright after I just relooked in my mirror.

joachim - Yo You forgot to say Snake *G*. Yeah, after seeing your 3 new face pics reminded me I never did a self portrait before. Giving it a try ^_^

I know, I know, I didn't work on the colors much.. Form and lighting is what I tried to sharpen here. BTW, feebsaint, I studied your version a bit and ended up realizing my neck on your overpaint is waaaaay too cropped

I then tried to take a digital picture of what I was actually seeing in my mirror, the angle is 10 off, enough to see a bit of my ear in the back, which I don't when I'm looking in the mirror drawing in Photoshop. After looking at this, I realize that my painting's a bit too linear, not round enough and that my shading surfaces are a bit flat.

Sorry about the crappy server, probably won't work, my normal server is down for some reason, but the web page is fine. :/

I worked right over yours before you posted the photo. I worked a little more once I had the photo. Very interesting, I tried to do the best i could with no ref, and then when my parched brain received information, it really sunk in. A good way to learn.

Snake, your are looking up at your head, see the barrel of the mouth? Same thing with the shape of the head-there is too much of the far side of your face. Think of your head in plan view, it is like the prow of a boat. not just yours, but everyones. So you are seeing that side of the head from a very different angle than the close side.

spooge - Ahh, I saved yours right next to mine and scrolled back and forth between the two and noticed what you changed, what remained the same, etc. The way you moved the top-left of my forehead, general head shape, eyebrows, eyes, etc.. Doing that awakened some sleeping braincells and made them go to work. Though I don't completely agree with some of the colors you used, at some places it seems as though I just drawn with charcoal for 5 hours and that I rubbed my hands on my face Thanks mate! Now it's my turn to do a paintover on one of yours... hrmmmmmm

Oh, and you can also use a GeoCities account for the sole purpose of hosting pics on Sijun, it's great, fast and practical.

tayete - Life's not _THAT_ easy. Unless Spooge is some kind of Jesus of the Digital Art world or something. Hehe!
