It's too THICK.

Feathers are very thin. Perhaps show little pieces of the background through the feather, and don't curl the ends around each other.

Try this also, try just doing 100% opacity lines for the skeleton structure of the feather, and then reduce opacity for the feathery part.

Dang, it looks like a braid, not a feather. Feathers won't have rounded shading like that! And feathers don't have long strands that wrap around each other. I like the pic BTW, looks very traditional.

Thanks both of you, I see your point... the fact is there ARE some weird feathers like this one.. Ostrich feathers are thick and heavy and fold and look round and firm...that's what I wanted... but not that heavy *argh*... I'll figure something out and play with transparencies.
Thanks

As for the "very traditionnal" yes; that was the point.. a bit pompous and traditionnal, highly relaxing

Hey there, glad to see /you/ here.

I think that the colour in itself might make the feather seem a little heavy. Perhaps if you make it less stark white and more ghostly in colour where you want to lighten it up - I don't know how to explain it in any other way.

Well... a feather is basically composed by many, many small "strands" - I have one of those lush, big feathers hanging on my wall. In spite of the fact that there's a lot of those strands, they are still somewhat transparent - or they appear to be, at any rate.

The ones that look opaque are the ones that are more straight and sharp - the ones that are fluffy like this one usually seem lighter and you can /almost/ see through them but not quite.

Agh, it's 2AM in the morning, I /should/ be asleep, but I'm not. And so I ramble. Sorry!

Should have known you'd be here ;) *waves* Yeah, right.. that's a cool idea for someone supposed to be asleep actually. I'll rework this one later on, as I'm a bit fed up with this portrait actually but I think I now know how to manage..or I'll change this darn feather into a fishing rod.
