I'm reworking the coffee girl. It's still very rough, so try to disregard the brushworkiness. Does she still look cartoony?

yes. rouge work has something to do with it. i wish i could be more specific but maybe it is the placement of the eyes. the mouth and nose look fine.

Looks nice Francis. I like the way you've started to brush it. But, yes, It look a bit cartoony Probably a lot because of the eyes..also, because the contours are so smooth and you've just included the most visible lines. ANd, I the neck is a bit to thin to be natural I guess, though that do exaggerat feminity I guess ? But, I don't mind it being a bit cartoonish though, but you asked
But, I think you could work a bit on the forehead. It seems very big, which makes the face a bit weird in my opinion. Maybe you could resolve it only by working a bit with the hair. Because now it seems like her forehead goes far further up than it should be, much because the heair doesn't seem to go around her skull. Hmm, don't know the english word, so I have difficult of explaining this. Do you understand when I say the divission in the hair that goes around the forelock, it should end further back on the right side. Damn, if you don't understand I can try to illustrated it.

Hello there
I think it looks quite good ! But her jaw seems a bit small compared to the rest of the head. Or maybe it's because the forehead is big as Joachim said. There's one thing bothering me though, look at the top of her forehead, where her hair meets the skin, there's some kind of dark line almost horizontal. Anyway, very good overall I think.

Hiya Francis.
This is really nice, and, yes, it does still have a cartoon like quality.
My main crit is that hair on the right hand side, above the forehead, seems to just stop. I think there needs to be just a little more hair around the hairline on the right hand side (her right hand side) forehead.
Anyway, great stuff! |

The main thing I noticed was that the chin and neck seem too far back, and the hairline too high:
old:
new:
chin, neck, and hairline were the only things moved. hope this helps.

Hi everyone, thanks for the very helpful feedback. I think I might have bitten off more than I could chew in trying to paint a very realistic portrait without using a reference. I'm trying to have a good drawing underneath, which is hard when you don't know enough anatomy, and also trying to develop a convincing color palette, which is hard when you haven't done enough of that either.
Anyway, it's still one of the main images being cycled in my Photoshop, so you guys will see it again.
Thanks for the help!

Yeah, that's the stuff, Francis!
Francis, don't worry about the hair... it's okay if she works at a hair salon - the ladies there usually go with the wackiest hair-dos - whatever uses the most hair-gel I believe :P
Bradford and Joachim say it all about the eyes.
Go look at Mergatroid's sketch" topic for eyes of a quality that I cannot attain yet

why not try to start out with some self portrait's by looking in the mirror, i find it to be a good exersice accually, you might learn something new, or remember something youve forgot |

fracis, I started mocking around with your picture, just couldn't resist, sorry. I hope you don't mind (if you do, let me know). It's a fun and very hard exercise, I think...gotta do more of this..
I know I didn't pull it off too well, but since we do things differently, it might give you some new ideas ?!?

Looks good - it is helpful for sure, and of course I don't mind the overpainting. Thanks for the input Joachim.
