Don't I have any crits? Hmmmm....I'd place the pupil in the center of the eye in the third sketch.

Hey Kid,

I really like the progression from the dumpy dino-bot in the top pic to the sleek and rather well-proportioned dino-bot in 2nd and 3rd pics.

I've been drawing a little robo something like this for the last few days so I can readily appreciate this

Damn, these are cool! Very Doug Chiangish! It looks so fun to draw pictures like that. The second drawing is my favorite, but that's just my taste. I agree with Jaymo on the pupil.

Jaymo-I agree with you about the pupil: but the Director wanted the pupil facing forward with the idea that the eyeball rotates. Not my place to argue...

Shardik-here is a profile of the whole thing pieced together. This was never meant as a design sketch. It actually appeared really small in a fake 'blueprint' for him that I did, so there are many mistakes.



S4Sb-there were many sketches and discussion with the director of the project to finally arrive at the look he wanted. I've included one more quickie that is kind of an intermediate between the first and the second sketch. Neither him nor I cared for it. Way too...cliche.

Im still trying to do concepts with markers, but I kinda dont get the proces.
What do you use to do highlights?
What markers do you use.
As far as I understood from your sketches you do basic shape with light marker then draw some outline with ball-pan or some ink pen, right?
If somebody knows a good website about how to draw with markers I'd appreciate posting it here.

Nexx, if you go to www.dchiang.com, then you'll find a tutorial he made in the Robota section of the page. He explains it his methods very well.

As far as my technique goes, I have a couple way I do things, both seen here.

The first is the 'Chiang' way, I guess. For an explanation just check out his site. First is blocking the major shapes with a 30% Cool Grey Prismacolor marker. Then the linework which is done with a Pilot Razor Point pen. Just make sure whatever pen you use doesn't run when you run marker over it.
I then use the diffent values of Cool Grey to help define the shape further. If I do my sketching with a 30%, I'll usually use a 40%, 50%, and 60% for this part. Higher values might come in if I want really dark areas.
The last step is highlighting. I like to do this with a brush and white gouache. The brush I use is a no.1 Windsor and Newton Series 7. It has a really fine point and makes it really easy to draw very detailed highlights. For subtle highlights I use a white colored pencil.

Sometime I'll draw the whole piece with a black verithin pencil and make a photocopy before I use markers. Such was the case with the dino head picture.

I'd look for any books containing concept art. I think that any of the Art of Star Wars books would do nicely, especially the one for Episode I. It's full of stuff.
Another good one (if you can find it) is The Making of Jurassic Park. A book that just came out with some great concept art by Sylvain Despretz is The Making of Gladiator(I'm not sure that is the official title).
Check out DVDs too; they often have concept art on them.
