oh..

it took me about.. hmm from the base sketch to that about 7 hours or so..

(I work slow)

but I mean my base sketch is so different to what the final product is.. well nearly final product....

Im always changing things...

eg. My vanishing point halfway through painting it..

Sheesh.. that was a killer.. the legs were changing every time I worked on it..

the background only took about 20 or 30 mins..

pretty basic..

the right side (mech point of view) looks a bit too clean cut. like if you erased the edge with the same round brush. thats the only thing i can find. otherwise good

Looks nice Freddio!
I like the lighting

But how is it goin' to walk?
The legs seem to have no joints or knees, they look like one cast-iron shape...

Very good. Much better than I can even attempt (at the moment), so I salute you. I agree that the knee would be hard to move witht he joints you have. Also the leg part that wraps around the hip pivot thing, seems to change perspective from the rest. The feet also would make this impossible to walk as the "toes" don't seem able to raise/lower, or at least raise, especially the big front one.

Don't take this wrong. I am jealous of your product. It is simply much easier to find points to improve than drawing one is.

Hey Hugh, you already known I really like this pic. There are some little things abit off here and there like the gatling gun, but you already know that. Anyway, one thing I only just noticed is the Aussie flag. That rocks! Yeah!
Nice touch

YOu know your perspective was messed up right? This one is closer. Work on it until it is right. The time you put into the little details would be better spent on more important things.

Priorities! Big important stuff first, little stuff later.

So you say, "I don't know how to fix the big stuff, so I will redeem things by encrusting the picture in detail, and nobody will notice the big stuff being wrong."

This reasoning will just slow down your overall progress.

Sorry for the soap box, my head hurts

Looks pretty good freddio. The reflection on the window is great. The gatling gun on top seems a bit off though. Other than that it's really good! Maybe adding some battle damage or dirt would help make it stand out some more.

I am in Awe of you... (such an original comment )

Thanks so Much for taking the time out to help me...

That really helped me out heaps..

I spent ages toiling over the perspective of the pic but just couldnt seem to get it 100% correct..

The tapered windscreen sort of made it look a bit strange..

But thats alot, I really couldnt see that... thanks

also, id say that guy in the pic should be as big as my mechs big toe

heh

Thanks all for your comments..

where abouts in OZ??

Hi there. Nice pic, you are lucky spooge gave you so much help, the basics of shape and perspective, lighting etc... this would improve your pics.

I think there are some really great things to come from you. I look forward to following your posts in the future.

maybe you should have thought about the composition a bit more? I think an extra 5 minutes at the planning stage would make a difference.

If you want to make the mech look bigger, try lowering the camera. Therefore the view would be looking upward and the mech would seem larger. (I think you wanted to make the mech seem big... "that guy in the pic should be as big as my mechs big toe")

...good to see an OZ mech for once...

Loki's tip: flip image horizontally from time to time. Mistakes will be easier to spot.

I think there is one other thing worth pointing out and its something I'm working on now.

Shading and value. Many times we think only of shading being only a gradient from dark to light.

Or if doing better we may think of it as shade to reveal form.

I think its important to keep in mind value when shading though.

Spooges version works because even though there are not many shades the values of the shades are chosen accurately.

And when shading we must think of texture and surface and material as these are the things that will change the shading of an object in the same lighting conditions.

But I think first, get the values right -- then render to more detail. Its fast and good way of doing it.

btw.. if anyone has any painting techniques for photoshop esp suited to old master styles please let me know (email or here).

Ok.. you can have your thread back now.
