Time for a little personal opinion here...or a rant, whatever you wish to call it...
The whole term "DIGITAL ART" nowadays seems like an amalgamous term for what artists do on a computer. Which, in my opinion, is a load of crap.
I mean, christ, people are just tossing the term around..."Oh, I'm a DIGITAL artist"..as if since cyber-culture is so hot now, they are ultimately tres chic because they can call themselves Digital Artists. I'm sorry, but drawing/painting a picture online is NOT "Digital Art".
For example, there are those that can paint a picture in real life, and then scan it in. Is THAT "Digital Art"? Hell, no. So then, what is the difference between doing that and painting it on the computer, when it will look the same? This goes back to the whole issue of photorealism as a real genre of art. While I do AGREE that it is an art, I refuse to call painting on the computer "Digital Art".
In my belief, "Digital Art" is a term that should only be used for media done with the INTRINSIC values and properties of the medium itself. You can categorize all sorts of types of art. There's sculpture, mixed media, painting, watercolor painting, acrylic painting, oil painting, etc. These are all descriptive of a technique and/or medium involved in the creation of art.
Therefore, painting or drawing should not be considered "Digital Art" simply because all one is doing is applying techniques learned and based upon real life art-creation, the only difference being that it is being done on the computer.
"Digital Illustration" is what it should be termed, the types of artwork being shown in these forums, for example. This would cover a broad range of works both done and altered on the computer, such as drawings, paintings, and photomanipulation, or other such editing with filters and effects.
So then, what would "Digital Art" be, exactly? What are the intrinsic values of the digital device known as the computer? That is a field yet to be fully discovered, but I belive it to be a mix of digital illustration, or even digital abstract illustration, mixed with multimedia, which is the true value of doing any artwork on the web. This would be a mix of illustration, animation (animated gifs, flash, etc), sound, text, and user interaction. There are several sites out there showcasing TRUE digital art. Sites, such as DigitalSalon make this distinction clearly, specifying that they showcase "Digital Visual Artists" rather than Digital Artists.
Perhaps if the forums had more discussion on TRUE Digital Art rather than just Digital Illustration, I would not have a problem with the title "Digital Art" as a forum topic...

"Digital art is undefined! You all are digital illustrators! DigitalSalon uses big words, and is therefore Super_Smart! I use the word intrinsic 2 or 3 times, therefore I am super_smart!"

Digital art entails anything done on the computer/digital format that is remotely artistic. 3d models, your so called "digital illustration", music, whatever.

Therefore, if one uses a computer to produce the INTRINSIC art of the aforementioned medium, you are a DIGITAL ARTIST, and are therefore creating DIGITAL ART.

Your attempt to start a war hath failed; your trying to shock us turns not a cheek. We realize your fallacy, your stereotypes, and ignore them.

You were also unbending in your views. To attack me doing the same would be to attack yourself. And since I don't think you want to attack yourself, the second attack falls.

I used the word "us" because you directed your attack on those who claimed themselves "digital artists", which includes the majority of those that inhabit these forums, including me. The "us" had some foundation. "We" was used because I seriously, and maybe zealously, doubt that anyone is going to take your "rant" for much more than that: an insane, unfounded, unorganized random collection of words.

You led the discussion to extremes first off. This called for a debate. And me, being the stickler for strict debate rules that I am, could claim the victory based on your own contradictions and whatnot.

I never called you an idiot. I never said I was always right. I attacked your post, not you. To attack the poster would be wrong and pointless, since I don't know you. I did not insult you right off the bat.

I've yet to see infantile behavior. This is logical debate, which happens to be the antithesis of infantile behavior.

I gave and explained my point of view in my first post. If you do something artistic on the computer, then it is considered digital art and you are therefore a digital artist.

You claim that one has to have mix of digital formats for something to be considered digital art. This is a fallacious concept. Number one, traditional art is traditionally categorically limited to one medium, be it oil, bronze, acyrlics, pencil, etc. One piece, consisting of one medium, is still TRADITIONAL ART. Therefore, one piece, consisting of one medium (i.e. "digital illustration), is still considered DIGITAL ART.

Oh, for heaven's sake.... I rolled my eyes when I saw the subject line of this. I've heard this debate and variants on it over and over again while I've been at art school, and all I can feel about it now is a sense of acute and aching...boredom.

Let's not get hung up on semantics, here. Let's just say that illustration is art, fine art is also art, and performance art is incomprehensible (JOKE!), and get off our soapboxes. It just...isn't that important an issue.

Well, as far as I'm concerned, I've always hated the word 'ART', and I truly mean that. Art has become some word to allow the expression of anything in any which way. I am not an artist, and I should call myself a digital illustrator... or 'artist'? Can I be an artist if I don't like 'ART' (where art can be bent pieces of metal into a meaningless strange form)?

Anyway, I suppose I sort of agree. So I'm a 2d and 3d digital illustrator.
