I've had enough "bad" friends to know, at least, what I don't want in a friend.

But what do I want a friend to be? That's so much more difficult. That's why I asked, to see what everyone would answer.

I think that mainly, I want a friend to be himself, or herself and to be upfront about it. No secret agendas. For example - I can have a friend who is rather bastardly, but I want to /know/ this. Then I know what I'm dealing with. I can have a friend who has a crush on me, but I /need/ to know that - because it'll colour everything that friend says or does, it's inevitable. I can have a friend who doesn't entirely trust me, and that's okay, because if I know that, I won't entirely trust her, or him, either.

A friend who's not being honest isn't a friend at all. With a "secret agenda", I mean that the friend has an ulterior motive other than just being my friend. It can be getting me into bed, it can be finding information about one of my other friends, or it can be something as simple as wanting me to draw pictures for him/her (has happened) or just trying to win other kinds of favours that have little to do with friendship (and whatever this is, it is more important for the person in question than actually being my friend. It's the reason to why s/he is befriending me). Am I making sense? I can't stand people who pretend to be friends, but are really just people with a hidden agenda. I hate being used.

True friends are always honest with you, said always what they think really about.
You can trust to friend your honour, your life, your money - anything and will be quiet for it.
You drink beer with friends, said about anythink, play in cards, traveling...

But is the one thing, which can destroy your freedom - is love to one girl...

Friends are people you can be yourself with and have no real need to impress, that you care about in some way and care back for you in the same.
True friends, however, are the ones that take more time to understand you and will back you up, even if they think you are wrong, because you are who you are to them. And, of course, vice versa.
My friendship with Lunatique has been 12 years, give or take a year or two, in the going...sure, we debate about a million topics and VERY rarely resolve any of them. Sure, he says something once every couple months that makes me want to whap him upside the head. Sure he says something once every few years that makes me want to blow his head off with my .44 Sure, I think his moving to buttfuck Kentucky is the stupidest life decision he's made in quite a long time...but hell, I'm still helping the bastard move...

...and charging him my cheap rate, at $50 an hour.

The difference between a good friend and a great friend:

A good friend will come bail you out of jail.

A great friend will be right there with you.
