What defines a friend?

Or rather - what is a friend's most important quality?

That s/he is trustworthy? That s/he listens when you speak? That s/he will always support you?

I guess a friend is anyone who you get along with (and gets along with you therefore), can put up with all the weird and unnecessary things you do and you do the same for them. Similar interests play a big part in this but that is just due to similar and 'compatible' (makes me sound like a nerd

) personality.

I think friends help us slog through life. They keep our ideas fresh. We share experiences. They tell us when we are being dumb asses (a real friend wouldn't hold back) and tell us we are beautiful (when we're feelin' kinda down) friends keep us alive.

a true friend is someone who you arent in competition with, someone who you feel completely relaxed when your with them, someone that will accept you as you, not expecting you to like the exact things and act the same was as they do.

I'll admit I haven't made any friends that meet this criteria yet, I'm working on it...

Heres a question:

How many of you actually trust your friends?

eg. I trust some mates to back me up if I were in a confrontation, though I know others would not.
Some wouldn't dare steal but I've busted more than one.
Do you trust them with everything, do you trust them if they were alone with your girl/boyfriend after a few drinks. How loyal?.
How loyal are you, perhaps some of you have thieved from friends. I trust very few people now, circumstances have led me to this.

I have a few friends that I can trust to the extreme, too bad they weren't my supposed close friends which I should have distanced myself from long before I finally did... :\

not to toot my own horn, but I'm probally one of the most trustworthy people you'll ever find, which is why it hurts more when your *brother* in the sense, fucks you over and turns evil in every aspect. just makes you want to rest your head on the train tracks and wait...

I trust my best friend A �cause i�ve known him for over 10 years and know he�ll allways be there.

I trust my friend B cause he�s proven to me that he�s trustworthy, in the 8 months that i�ve known him now.

I dont trust my friend C, even though ive known him for 5 years now, cause i know he doesnt take certain things seriously even though he should. Doesnt make him a bad friend, you just have to keep it in mind.

I dont trust my girlfriend, cause she�s obviously hiding stuff from me, like i know she hides stuff from other people. Doesnt mean i dont love her, it�s just something you have to keep in mind.

A friend is someone that:

Even after knowing all the stupid shit you've done in your life, still loves you and gives you the respect a friend deserves.

Will be the first to offer help when you are in trouble.

Will stick up for you when people talk behind your back.

Will go out of their way for you and not complain about it.

Will come to you for your opinion/advice when they don't know what to do.

Wants to see you happy.

Will tell you what they REALLY think.

Will get mad at you when they think you are not living up to your true potential.

Would want you to be on a desert island with him/her if he/she was in a plane crash and stranded. (Ha! Some friend. . ..)

Well apparently by what my friends are like, it defines as:

Someone who will always talk shit about you behind your back.
Someone who will always hold back the truth.
Someone who will mock the things you do and not repsect your choices.
Someone who won't help you out of a bind.
Someone that will hold all your mistakes against you.
Someone that doesn't understand what you are like.
Someone that assumes too much about you.
Someone that tries to make himself feel better when you're down.
Someone that takes your dreams and destroys them.
Someone that will never watch your "blindside."

etc. etc.

Thats what my friends are like anyways, they're pretty cool once you get to know them... on occasion...

Oh god, don't even get me started on bad parents. I haven't even gotten to what bad friends are like and you want me to jump to bad parents? And what about enemies? Geez, theres so many other things to talk about. But those are topics for another thread that I'm not starting.
