i dont even understand why anyone would make a tutorial for that pic. The coloring is butt ugly and the shadowing even worse!
If every painter piece looks like this i'm sticking to my beloved photoshop! :P

However I could have done the exact same coloring in Photoshop without any extra trouble so if you don't have Painter 7 it's no problem. Just use Photoshop. Painter 7's brushing engine is a bit better, that's all.

Hi,

Yes, the tutorial does include some instructions for using Painter.

There's one part I think you should be careful about:

"Select magic wand and uncheck contageous. Then click on the color you're going to shade on the flat color layer, and start brushing on the new shading layer. "

Painter's Magic Wand tool doesn't do a good job making selections. Unchecking "contaguous" (It's spelled contiguous), is possible in Painter, but the selection may be flakey.

Instead, since you're selecting areas of flat color, use the Dropper tool to pick the color, then use Select > Auto Select, Using: Current Color. Now all parts of the image that are the current color are selected and you can either hold down the Alt/Option key and use the Lasso tool to deselect the areas you don't want to paint, or if the areas are separated enough so you won't accidently overlap into another area when painting, you can just begin painting in whatever selected area you want.

Good luck!
