painter first started life as MetaCreations Painter, then the company was bought by Corel (micro$haft) version 6 after they decided to concentrate on 1 product (We appreciate your patience during our transition period. As most of you know, MetaCreations announced its intention to divest its prepackaged graphics software products back in December 1999 to focus solely on the Metastream, now Viewpoint technology.), its now changed hands again (pro create painter 7) after they took some of the technology to enhance their paint app ..

Painter homepage ... Download a demo from this place ...
CreativePro Painter Review ...
Corel Suite 11 review PhotoPaint 11 is included in this Suite, read the review to get an idea of what PhotoPaint can do. And compare it to Adobe Photoshop 7 ...
Adobe Photoshop 7 Review ...
And remember to use Google to search for more info if you need to ...
There are a ton of reviews out there, some of the ones above may or may not be Adobe biased, some may be Corel biased ... you will have to figure out which is which on your own ... |

That review is TERRIBLE.
How the hell do you review a paint program without even mentioning its brush engine?
"Oh dear, this image stitching feature is nowhere near as robust as the one in Photoshop. I DECLARE FAILURE!"

Yeah Balistic,
I knew you would have something to say about that, so I added the "semi disclaimer" about "biased" and "figure out on your own" ...
Actually the previously linked CorelSuite 11 review is listed on top of Corels own site, and as usual it seems that the Corel marketing team themselves have little idea about how competitive (and even superior) their product actually is. It is however I think a good starting point for some insight into the CorelDraw Suites strong points too, even though the weak points are thrown way out of proportion.
Here is a new link, Corel chases the five hundred ( About Corels products vs. the competition ) I quite like this one, although it is certainly biased, it tells many truths that graphic artists simply refuse to admit because they have been "brought up" to believe that "Adobe products are for professionals, the rest are just toys." Which of course is nonsense ... I'm sure a lot of Adobe fans here will come on in and dispute this, after playing around with PhotoPaint for all of 5 minutes and thus declaring that, since PhotoPaints interface is different "Corel just sucks" or something equally retarded.
Since Corel accuired Painter, some of Painters features seems to have been "brought over" to PhotoPaint and vice versa ... And as I always have done since I first met CorelDraw in, ummm ... -89 (I think), it's been my preferred tool for graphics, and it does not take very long before it is pretty obvious that the CorelDraw Suites are a pretty freakin' strong deal.
For some reason Corel themselves seems to have "settled in" behind Adobe, and admitted that they are somehow lesser, and not as capable, marketing themselves in the past as a tool for beginners. They seem to be gaining some speed lately though, nodoubt due to Microsofts heaps of cash, and maybe someone over there also sees that Corels products are superior in most cases to other competing products who are desperately trying to keep up.
The "painting abilities" of all digital design packages receive little attention, maybe because the reviewers have little or no skill in the painting department, I have no idea, something is not quite right about that anyway. They still focus their tutorials on making lame web-buttons and suchlike , instead of digging into producing the kind of imagery that is shown daily here on Sijun, amongst others ...
I'm on your side Brian ... |

BOb,
Actually, Painter started as Fractal Design Painter (owned by Fractal Design). Then Fractal Design merged with another company and became Metacreations.
Later, Corel bought Painter, Bryce, and KPT F/X and it hasn't changed hands again.
Procreate is the division of Corel that handles their graphics software. |

Hi,
Corel PhotoPaint is a paint program and part of the Corel Draw suite, as mentioned in a previous message.
Painter is fairly new to Corel since they bought it from Metacreations in, I think, Spring 2000. It was then at version 6, the current version is Painter 7, and Corel/Procreate is enlisting Beta testers now for Painter 8. Painter is most noted for its Natural Media brush technology that provides drawing and painting tools unmatched by any other software. Installed with Painter are hundreds of drawing and painting tools (collectively referred to as Brushes) and the user can create unlimited numbers of custom brushes.
Painter Classic is a very abbreviated software, not part of the full Painter series of versions, but based on Painter 5. It's currently bundled with Wacom tablets and usually gets the new tablet owner excited about Painter which leads to their buying a full Painter version. Though Painter Classic has some very nice brushes and the Clone painting feature which works the same as in full Painter versions, it doesn't have Layers and a lot of other features that even Painter 4 and 5 had. Still, it's worth playing with and some nice art can be done using Painter Classic.
I don't know if either of these reviews are the same as ones mentioned above, but maybe they'll help to give you an idea of what Painter can do:

Also take a look at my site where you'll find a lot of tutorials and demo images and on the right side of the page, click the link to Painter Developer John Derry's Visual Guides. You can download them in PDF format and read about Painter 7 Water Colors and Liquid Ink (just two examples of Painter's many brush categories). The URL to my site is below my signature. |

Fractal, thats the one, was racking my brains thinking that sommat was wrong, but it was early, i'd just woken up.. god that was a long time ago
the thing that put me off of coreldraw was the boring a$$ video's you got with it that explained how to use it (talking '91, CD v3?) and i took so easily to Aldus Freehand without needing any real help from the manuals (appart to work out the complex stuff like pasting inside, blends etc)
as for Corel's marketing, remember they're now pwned by micro$haft and so its all handeled by their marketing dept. |
