Hey there ...

A good while ago someone said right here on this forum that they never heard about art contests until it was too late to take part.

Well, I stumbled over this info while wasting some time online, and figured I should share. Although it is an obvious marketing stunt from Corel/Procreate and ViewPoint, I thought I had to do my part to spread the word to "help further the Digitalism movement" ...

The contest is open for submissions until Jan. 10, 2003, only residents of USA and Canada can submit an original work of art in digital format, all artwork must be created using software featured on the Digitalism Tour (whatever that might be) The prizes are pretty hot ...

The bad things ...
Strangely enough there are no submissions yet on display, some of the reason for this might be due to the fact that the dudes promoting this probably has never heard of Sijun, Eatpoo and ConceptArt (for example), where the people they should be wooing hang out.

Open only to residents of the USA and Canada (minus Quebec), what kind of nonsense is that ... If tax restrictions is a problem, at least have regional contests too, The Asian / African / European / Australian / South American Digitalism Champion, That would be cool ...

Another fact is that the content of the contest website is minimal to say the least, the ProCreate webdesign has struck again, links not working, pages not loading, loading too slowly or not properly etc ... GREAT idea, bad execution ...

This is the neat part ...

"Digitalism Defined

1. (?) In the context of all of Art History, Digitalism is our current art period (involving any artistic expression/form that is digitized: drawing, painting, photography, movies, music, 3D sculpture, web design, etc.) and made possible by digital tools such as computers, peripherals and enabling software (such as procreate Painter 7).

Like the advent of paint in tubes, new brush designs or newly discovered minerals mixed into mediums to create new colorsdigital tools allow artists greater freedom to express their ideas, and encourage them to imagine the impossible.

As a movement, Digitalism frees artists to create the impossible; but it also drives print, graphics, illustration, film, photography and other creative endeavorsenables fresh thinking, new ideas and indeed, even the processes of rendering and distributing the work in surprising and amazing new ways.

Finally, Digitalism is a movement enabled by the companies that create these digital tools. The brilliant digitalists at these companies actually use Digitalism to create Digitalism for other Digitalists! Digitalism then, is at the centerthe very coreof a multi-billion dollar industry. Competition for the heart and mind share of those who create the art and the products is keen. The opportunity to get out in front and lead an entire market segmentto both influence and create itis where the Digitalism Tour by procreate comes in. Our sponsor partners have joined us to propel the movementwe hope you will join us as well.

Waddaya think, fancy calling yerself a "Digitalist", I think it sounds pretty cool ...

I'd be cocky enough to suggest that an amendment be made to the definition though, this part :"(involving any artistic expression/form that is digitized: drawing, painting, photography, movies, music, 3D sculpture, web design, etc.) " should probably specify that the artwork should be created exclusively, or at least primarily with digital tools, otherwise there would be room for confusion when someone makes a watercolor painting the old fashined way, scans it in (digitizing) thus moving their artwork from non-digital to digital ...

I guess digitizing is the process that should be defined a little better ...

Damn.. and I was considering taking part of this. *kicks a rock and goes back to her sketchbook muttering something about fachism*.

It's rather interesting that we have already came up with a name for our current art period. I wonder if it'll be the same in, say, 200 years. capitartlism ? j/k
