Probably not great.

Have you looked at the Wacom Graphire? Your best choice if you're on a budget.

Let's face it ; there ARE better tablets than Wacom even tho almost each and everyone of us on Sijun swear by them.
I just haven't had the leisure to test other brands but Wacom probably is THE best quality/price one.

Check this baby out ...
CalComp DrawingBoard III large format. With the highest resolution on the market todayup to 12,700 lines per inch/500 lines per mmand available in a number of sizesranging from 18x24 to 44x60 inches

Seriously though, your chosen Genius tablet have no pressure sensitivity as far as I can see from the website, nor do they have tilt sensitivity. the tilt you can live without, but some degree of pressure sensitivity is neccesary IMHO to not be missing out. A nuisance is also that most Genius tablets products are not cordless, having the cable getting in the way, curling all over the place will piss you off. (notice that the tablet/stylus images on the Genius site have all been "touched up" to erase the cords from the image, and also "forgets" to mention anything about whether the stylus is cordless or not, pretty important info for us "consumers" I think. And what's the deal with a plus/minus 5mm accuracy level ??? 5mm is a LOT compared to the normal 0.01" is it not ??? I think it must be a typo, it should probably read 0.5mm, which is not the best, but probably good enough for sketching/painting purposes. In the UK your chosen Genius costs around 150US$, for that amount I would rather go for the Aiptek below. Genius don't seem to be selling their products in the US it seems. I wonder why.

Usually I'd ignore answering tablet-questions, especially the ones asking about the Wacom tablets due to the exessive info already provided on this subject, but this was something new, and I also just stumbled over a promising new tablet from Aiptek (see more info below). I got a Genius tablet as a present a few years ago, and just wanted to warn you and other tablet-less artists here. Most Genius tablets are more like toys than tools for artists, I got one, and I want this Aiptek one below instead. But I'm very broke, so it'll have to wait. Genius does have the new WizardPen tablets though, in the small tablet category (4x5 inches), it looks promising, more info below.

So how about this alternative from Aiptek, the HyperPen 12000, www.aiptek.com
It looks pretty cool on paper don't you think ???, especially the price, here's some info ...
it is 12x9 inches,
it has a resolution of 3,048 lines per inch (Wacom Intuos has 2,540 lpi),
it has 512 levels of pressure sensitivity, Intuos has 1024
(how many degrees of pressure can you actually control ? )
it's got a chordless stylus/pen (needs a 11 gram AAAA battery, hard to find!)
it don't have tilt sensitivity
it costs 150$, Intuos 12x9 costs 470$
that's only 50$ more than the 3.65" x 5" Graphire !!!

I dunno, maybe this is the contender to Wacoms irritatingly overpriced hardware ... I sure hope so ...

For those out there looking for cheaper smaller tablets to start off with, maybe the Genius WizardPen is worth a look, the 4x5 actually seems to be a contender for the Wacom Graphire2.

It has a cordless 512-level pressure sensitive pen (same as Wacoms Graphire2),
4064 LPI resolution (much more than Graphire2s 1015 LPI),
it has a 5.5" x 4" working area (compared to Graphire2s 3.65" x 5")
and it costs 55US$ compared to 99US$ for the Graphire2.

While hunting for alternatives I also bumped into this page with a lot of good info for beginners on the "What Tablet should I choose" topic from a PaintShopPro e-zine, check it out ...

I just wanted to share a little.

I have been looking into getting one for ages but the price was completly out of hand. i am really thinking about making the move even if it is a base model unit. if i get good with it ill go for the large format unit later.

I have an AIPTEK graphics tablet (8000), and for 1/3 the price of the wacom its worth every penny. Tilt isn't a big deal, and really... a color has only 256 tints and shades, including the original hue (computer speaking), 512 levels of pressure is more than enough.

I recommend the AIPTEK products to anyone who is suffering financially.

Regarding the impact of adding a 11 gram AAAA battery to the pen weight, I'd guess it comes down to what you grow used to.

A regular graphite pencil weighs around 14 grams.

The Wacom Pens are all between 12-13 grams, the 1024 degrees of pressure is sensed between 30-400 grams of pressure on the tip.

This fountain pen weighs close to 120 grams.

I therfore guess that a battery pen would then weigh around 30 grams or so with the battery included, still doesn't seem so terrible to me.

But that's just me, and I'm no Bouguereau, that's for sure.

Sir ,
I recently bought the Aiptek Hyperpen 8000U ,and have to say it works !!,i never have really used the Wacom tablet ,however im sure its a sweet piece.I would recomend the Hyperpen to any Artist as for taken over Wacom i doubt it!! cause its the more popular brand and has more features , but ill use a dame rock and sidewalk chalk to pump out artwork if i have to !! get any thing man !a real artist will use whatever he has !! goodluck partner
