Hey all I was just curious if anyone is as dependent on music as I am while drawing. See, to me it is like bacon and eggs, cream and coffee, I love them both but they are nothing without each other.

I know I can still draw or write without music but I just don't want to, it just seems to ass more emotion and passion to my projects while they are still progressing.

Do you guys have any fav music, some that is relative to the mood of the piece that you are creating??? If you have nay favs or any specific music/stories post em up!!!

Its totally essential for me to have music. I usually listen to something with meaning. Beethoven is very inspiring for moody and glum peices. System of a Down is good for the political and anger directed peices. Other sorts of music, such as a favorite song of mine Suzuka are good for dramatic peices. All in all, without music, my art would be duller than black.

Holy crap, Galo... you picked off like two people I listen to consistently when drawing: Astral Projection & Loreena McKennitt. Very immersive music.

I think the key is that it needs to be something that distracts your left hemisphere so your right can get down to business. I was never a Trance fan before, but I found that something long, driving, with no lyrics is perfect background noise for art.

blind I have to totally agree and relate to the sentance, I never really got into trance on my own, it was more like my brain saying "Hey I need something to focus this calculator on for the creative side to get moving" Trance and even House does that so well.

I have started downloading the astral projections, and loreena right now. Maybe we should all compile a solid list for each other so that we can introduce people on the board to our favorites.

But I agree with you guys... no music, no paint. I can get rolling without it, but time flies a lot faster when working with tunes, if you know what I mean.

I've gotten so used to having the shuffle function checked on my winamp that I find it hard to go back to listening to one CD from beginning to end.

It's awesome to jump from a hardcore industrial track to a sugary Jpop anime song, then to an 80's big hair rock, to 70's electronic music, to film score..etc.

Usually, I either simply start 6 gigs on random or I start Conan the Barbarian Soundtrack (Basil Poledouris or something like that, really good hero/adventure stuff).

When I REALLY have to dig into something though, I turn the volume way up, put on headphones, and use a Winamp effects filter to slow down music speed to near 50 %. It really makes me receptive to the visual, maybe because I don't reconize the familiar music/rythms anymore. It's really suggestive and immersive.

I love the sound of a good live techno set going. I have about 9.5 GB of DJ Tiesto for painting. I like the fast-paced, high energy music to keep me going. I only wish that mp3 playback didn't eat up so much system resources. Mabye it's time to upgrade that processor again....

depends on what i want to draw, more often than not though i play loreena mckennit and enya though nice and soothing, helps me relax and let the art flow

Music is definitely essential while painting.

I listen to whatever's in my winamp directory at the time. Usually a blend of just about every genre of music you can think of. I like it all.

depends what am I drawing..

when something powerfull.. then the background should be some metal.. Blind Guardian..

when something wierd/psychodelic.. then something electronic/ambient (Mum, Future Sound of London, Massive Attack, Waldec, etc..)

when something sweet.. then usually the 60's.. like give love and peace to all hippie music =)

music doesn't make mood.. mood makes the music =)

I own a very great book called "The Animators survival guide". It relates to many succesfull animators and painters, and the first lesson in this book is "Plug Out"!!! No music while painting! Music steels a bigger part of your concentration than you might suppose. Music might be realy relaxing, but the more you are relaxed, the less you are concentrated. The author sais also, that he knows many animators that improoved much after "plugging out".

Well, that�s what I read, and I believe It�s probably true, but I�m addicted to Music as well, so I won�t plug out.

the only thing i've found hard to listen to is System of a Down.. i love their latest album, but because its so fast and heavy i end up rushing everything!!

I have to go with Christian Lang on this one. Plugging out is the best thing to do.
For me, if I listen to something I really love, like metal or something, I put some of my energy into it, so that's so much less that goes into the painting.

Sometimes I will listen to more calm music, like some chillout (The Chillout Session, Classic Chillout album), trip hop (Hooverphonics). But I totally avoid the stuff I would normally listen to, because then I start headbanging, tip tapping my fingers, listening to the lyrics and singing...

I use the music as a sort of purely background thing to keep me in the mood. It must not be intrusive, but rather it keeps me in a sort of cocoon where I dont care about anything else than the work I am doing.

Anyway... I guess it's a bit hard to explain

Classic music roxx00rz. Being a music student I listen a lot to Sergei Prokofiev, Jean Sibelius:"finlandia", lyrical pieces by Edvard Grieg and why not W.A Mozart:requiem.. don't forget ye olde Arvo P�rt either. His music is really dreamy.. espscially one named "passio", one track 67 minutes long. Also sixties jazz like Keith Jarrett or Jan Johansson "Jazz in swedish"
Otherwise i would really recommend icelandic band S�gur R�s, Godspeed You Black Emperor! or ambient, such as Aphex twin or Boards of Canada. Maybe drum n' bass such as LTJ bukem, grooverider or Talvin Singh-Anokha:soundz of the asian underground. Try it out!

Edit: Whoa, forgot the most important: Renaissance music by John Tavener, G.P da Palestrina and everything performed by the Hilliard ensemble. those guys rock.

Hmm, I've got the same book Christian Lang has, and I agree, but then again, animation requires a lot of focus. The diagram that Williams drew for that part is hilarious though!

I think after reading this thread I'm going to go searching for some trance music. Sounds like it works like magic! What used to work for me was Bright Eyes or the soundtrack to Silent Hill, or some talk radio...
