Bummer ! Thanks
I remember hearing somewhere some time ago about a freeware painter clone out there somewhere on the net, though - I'm still searching for it - but any help's welcome. |

I think someone wrote that the UNIX graphics program called Gimp had a PC version and that it was free. |

You could also try searching for Project Dogwaffle. Despite the funny name, it's actually pretty good. It tries to simulate the feel of natural media (similar to Painter Classic).
I'm not sure if its author is still making new versions available for download, but I'm sure you could find an old version hanging around somewhere on the net.
Here's a link to the homepage:

How about OpenCanvas? Heard a lot about it, seen some work done with it, never found it on the net. Any tips?

I think open canvas is a great program.. and the size is less than 1M.. i'm really amazed by what the little program can do...
openCanvas versio 2 is not free.. but you can download a trial version of it..
or you can download version 1.. it's free (i think).. you can find it all over the net..

Wow ! Thanks for the replies
I've settled on the GIMP for my painting needs - Dogwaffle looks excellent, but it doesn't have a shortcut to the eyedropper ...
With all these (great) free software over the net, It makes me wonder who needs photoshop, honestly ? |

All wacoms come with Painter Classic, which is good for basic paintings, but not useful for anything more complex. |

I am aware of that, but dogwaffle does not switch you back to the paintbrush once you let go of the shortcut. It's VERY counterintuiative. Pity. I liked the brushes. |
