I've got photoshop 5.5 and 7.0 installed and I get the same problem in both programs, first of all, some tools like the lasso tool for example, is black, If I hold the tool over a black surface I can't se where it is. Second: everytime I do small movements with the brush tool it gets stuck for a 10th of a second before moving on, it's very annoying!

Has anyone had this problem before, does anyone know what to do?

Please help me!

Thanx in advance

-john

Yes... I had the problem, especially in PS7 until I discovered that the slice tool was activated accidentally. Check that VIEW/SHOW/SLICES does not have a check next to it.

In PS7, the slice tool is right above the brush tool on the tools bar. It's real easy to accidently touch it... which activates slice.

They are used primarily for creating comples graphic design and image maps that are used with HTML for website design.

Thanks you for that tip. Slices being shown shouldn't slow it down that much...
Much better without their possible visibility, ps7 runs much faster now.

Yea... I should think Adobe would so something about that. I suspect there are a lot of unhappy users that think PS7 is really slow just because they have accidentally clicked the slices icon right above the brushes icon, and then not turned it off.

Adobe doesn't do too many things badly, but this is one -- making the slice default to ON for the whole image, rather than not turning ON until the user has actually made a slice.

I work on a monitor set to 2048 x 1536, so that tool bar is quite small. I accidentally hit that slice icon all the time.

eyewoo: Perhaps using shortcut keys would be an idea. e.g. 'b' to select brush etc. that way you don't really have to use the toolbar much at all.

Just in Addition to the slices-thing above: When "smoothing" (don't know the english word, but is has to be something like this) in the brush-palette is activated, performance goes down immediately....very annoying IMO.

ceenda... yea, I use the B key a lot, along with many other shortcuts and actions, but sometimes my cursor is just near the tool bar, so I dive in... sometimes with bad aim

Nice tip, Eyewoo. Makes me wonder what other little web-centric features and whatnot can be turned off in PS to speed it up for painters. In fact, I wonder if someone has a website out there devoted to tuning PS for painting. That'd be a helpful page to have around. Not just for new painters either, but even after a reinstall you forget all your settings. Would make a good checklist.

Pickman: Do you mean the Wet Edges check box? I'm using 6.0

Strata: Yeah, he does. He also helped me out trying to decide how to build my drive array. It's been a while since I've been through his tips section, though. I'll have to re-peruse it.
