Mnay ways to do this. When I do coloring for comic books, I prefer to place the line art into a new channel, with visibility selected, but not the draw on selected. This allows me to paint freely over the lines, with no worry about hurting the lines. When done, I can copy the line art and either multiply over, or, better still, paste into the black channel in cmyk mode.
I paint back to front, using the pencil as it is non anti-aliased. This allows the colors to be easily selected. I keep opacity to 100%, so I can draw over previous shapes. I will start with larger shapes, like an entire figure, then re-select that figure, and use the pencil to subdevide into further shapes which I fill with the paint bucket. Last, I will select each shape, and add whatever shading I need, either with airbrush, gradients, or brushes in lower opacities. When done, I drop the line art into the black channel. |
