Here is a more complete drawing.. please tell me my problems lol :X I need advice on drawing in general. Is it the medium that bugs me? Sometimes i do actually feel sick of doing everything with pencil...PLUS I havent been thaught to do anything with color... just damn pencil (*#@$ i was lazy to shade the above cause the lineart is crap and i need help with lineart... i mean.. argh i dun know :X i would like it if some experienced ppl gave me a 101 in here discussion on how to draw better :X Maybe tips.. i dunno something heh
(i was scared that ill be the mockery of the forum for the rest of my life with the above heh......so here is the updated pic)
Here is something thats done with photoshop (you helped me out sijuns I used photoshop (note its black and white)
http://www.cgocable.net/~miki/sketches/secondportrait_final.jpg
Then here is my attempt at learning to do stuff with color...
http://www.cgocable.net/~miki/sketches/Fate_Of_The_Damned_Wip2.jpg
Before-hand i would draw something in black and white then edit in photoshop and color it by using color layers :X
http://www.cgocable.net/~miki/sketches/Roshido_-_The_Fallen_Batosai.jpg
http://www.cgocable.net/~miki/sketches/Roshido_-_The_Fallen_Batosai_color_.jpg
Here is also something thats not on the site (sketch of an anime character i like):
http://www.cgocable.net/~miki/sketches/iria.jpg
http://www.cgocable.net/~miki/sketches/iria2.jpg
the second image is the proof of my hate towards pencil.. i wanted to ink it somehow so i used illustrator to draw over the iamge with vector lines.... descent lineart i guess.. but hmm took me a very long time with a mouse..
Also here is a comic i did in illustrator fairly long ago.. it doesnt make sense its sorta an inside joke..but its about a friend getting whipped by another friend lol... Just thaught id include it since its a little variety to the sketches
http://www.cgocable.net/~miki/Episode-1.jpg
My teachers at school (in grade10 and 11.. now im entering 12th year in sept..) all were like 'super positive ppl' they'd give me a 10/10 on everything and it ticks me off (#@*(#@ because either they dont care or they are too kind -- well they are..., or am i expecting too much out of myself for grade10-12.. I just feel so afraid im not going to be accepted into sheridan which from one side i hear im pretty welcome (my teachers all positive blabla)... then i see the real world and what ppl can do such as on sijun... and then there is a problem that err two generations are graduating at the same time in canada... so its 100% harder to get into sheridan (@#** .... when i see what u ppl can make im like oh man... i swear though in grade8 i couldnt even draw stickman.. i was heading towards sciences but i totally switched interest and wana study art :X
http://www.cgocable.net/~miki/main.htm
That is my old old stuff I made a little test for friends to visit etc... :X There is some artwork up there please check it out i think some of those has the problem with me 'overshading' my teacher loves the shading i hate it 70% of the time 'overshading' ends up ruining the drawing.. for example i did this one drawing it was extremely real.. but somehow i felt like it should be shaded more then the lightning was all screwed up and it looked like a drawing again........ i always would prefer to draw anime without shading.. more or less i wanted to learn to draw in a cartoon manner rather then realism, i wnated to use dramatic lightning not shading all over the iamge.. i make everything too dark or gothic... thats the feeling i get (*#@(*# I dont know what to say i need you to sorta evaluate me heh :P and give your advice PLEASE I reall appreciate it :X
Im aiming for sheridan's illustration 3 year program then computer animation post secondary 1 year program... now with stuff like this i probably wont live too long to see the door before I attempt to even enter the building they'll be like please dont enter we can see you suck right at front...thank you leave... me: sniff ;_;
I'm getting a wacom tablet tomorrow im highly excited bought one from ebay (Wacom Artz-II 6x8.. but i'll need to get an ADB to USB converter)

I know when youre talking about "all those talented people here on sijun" it's not about me but anyway.
look at youre picture.... you wanted to make it look intresting, you wanted to create some cool pose, but you failed. why ? You started drawing frontal view, he would fall down if he would stand like this, his leegs look like bended pipe. When you were drawing it you should think about how his weight was distributedd on to the legs(?), how such mashine would stand. His arms for sure wouldn't be in such position. So first lets make his pose more "possible in the real world"
I will draw with my tablet that sucks ( i would preffer to do it with pencil).
now we can apply some human anatomy knowledge. And we don't want so many straight lines...
Ok, me thinks its better. We ve got a robot but we wanted a robot in a (as i call it) funky position. I'm at the stage of learning that now so here is my poor attempt. We want something intresting so he won't be looking at us and he will be firing his gun.
Then if that is worked out we add color background and it's done.
If you want to expand you must know the basics. When i started lerning myself how to draw people i was drawing those bubbles and stickmans. Yeah it was hard. I've couldn't imagine how to make them look like people. All my poses looked stiff. It was PITA to draw something from imagination. And when i wanted to draw something extra , like a robot, it looked totaly crappy. Today is much better, why ? Because i've lerned basics and practised ALOT. With time i stoped drawing bubbles, i ve started to just know how should the line look. Now i can see that because ive learned how to draw a decent looking pose (i hope it looks decent ) i can draw all kind of other things. Like monsters or mechas. At the beggining all my poses looked stiff and unnatural, but ive lerned the anatomy and looked at other people work to see how did they make it look good. I know ive got ALOT to learn (not only about figure drawing and anatomy) but i thinkn because ive got will to leran and I practice i will "make it". And i think you are able to do it too.
For me the biggest change in my 2 year art self education was downloading a loomis book from this very forum. I was studding it for the past year and my skills have improoved alot(i woud really like to show you the proofs but my scanner is broken).
All I can really say and probabbly evryone will say is "practice, practice, pracitce"
hope it makes any sense.

You know even your little box sketch is better then my drawing i think i really want to follow your advice, i am a fairly fast learner and i am very glad to listen to everything everyone says (including you of course), i really am interested in the loomis book, ive seen a few pages of it and for a while doodled but like, i stopped because i was busy with school (non-art semester :X) Hmm, if i am aloud to say so, where is this online book? I believe the only way for me to improve is to learn from that book then... i mean ill probably be bored unable to make it 'cool' (as in building smashing exploding robots) lol... but i believe its a baby step i sorta skipped.. u see as i was saying i only picked up my interest in drawing in grade9.. grade8 i couldnt even draw stickman, in grade10 and 11 i took art but my teachers sorta sucked (excpet grade11 but not too much concentration on basics or well anything...).. so would you please be kind and direct me to this loomis book? thanks And im highly excited about getting a tablet, i like the aspect of the drawings to be neat and tidy :P not dirty like pencil or 'oily' and smoodgy like paint i dont like getting icky LOL |

I just graduated high school so I know how it feels because I was in your situation last year. I loved art back when I was a kid up until we had to have it in jr. high. I drew quite a bit but then I had probably the most evil teacher ever. I spent more time in the hall and in the office then I did drawing in that class. So from 7th grade to 11th I didn't pick up a pencil to draw. then I found these forums after doing some 3d work and realized I NEEDED to have a basic understanding of drawing at least.
erm not that you needed to know that but thought you might like to know there are others in your same shoes.
tips from me though would be to think more about Mass. how things have weight and depth. not just shapes on paper. Pretend sunlight is falling on whatever you are drawing and create some shadows and really think about what you are doing. It will come.
Your black and white face is quite nice actually. just think about things more, like how colors work, and how shadows aren't just black. given time it will come together. Have fun

There is so much to learn, even if you 'get things' right. Art is a science I believe. There's so much you have to do, simply to take one step. You have to observe, practice, paractice, practice and then have an understanding. It's almost like a language. You learn the letters (shapes), grammar (putting shapes together) and then memorize endless numbers of words (color variation.) When you finally have all this, that's just the most basic form, but enough ground to stand on.
The beauty about art is, when you observe something, you as an artist, interpret it differently and will output something unique. Learn more and add flavor to art, like visual poetry.
When I'm bored on the train holding the handrail. I look at how the light hits my hands, how colors bounce off, how my weight affects the pose, what perspective I'm looking at. So much stuff, and I still don't get it right. Good enough, but not satisfactory. The more you know, the better your art gets. If you know how a house is built, you'd be an amazing artist when it comes to buildings.
So, I don't know what I'm getting at here :P Don't just learn to draw, learn everything. If you're not willing to put in the time and dedication, then uhhh..*shrug* Just learn everything and then forget it all and just draw. It'll seem so natural, you wouldn't need to draw perspective lines to get perspectives down. Well, I'll just shut up now. |

How would i go about drawing just about anything some ppl use lines (sticks) to start something some ppl use bubbles etc... but i dont quite understand it or at least when i make a bubble i start pressing harder and then i end up with a bubbly boy LOL and with stick method i end up with a stickman or box boy. Anywho see the above image i wanted to make some robot in a sorta weird stance now.. it sux of course but .. hmm i dunno what to say i just need advice on drawing lineart better :X hmm ya... i am getting a wacom tablet hopefuly tomorrow and i wana practice in photoshop because i am sick of pencil (the above is crap.. im capable of drawing 10 times better but... its not the same when u wana make something new out of your mind... looking at an image or whatever having some reference is smoiewhat 'easy' or well easier... but im trying to drawing stuff out of my mind... i know some of u will say learn anatomy but hmm... i dunno what to say plz just post your rant i need advice ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |
