The subdiv surface modelling is dreadful.
And there are too many buttons.
Plus its slow slow slow |

I see...
Thankyou for your thorough and well thought-out evaluation, it was extremely worthwhile....for me to poop on.
The subdiv modelling isn't ideal - it's somewhat slower than Softimage's effort, and requires a bit of work before you figure out its intricacies, particularly if you're doing history work with it.
Too many buttons, huh?
Let's take a look, shall we?
That's about 20 buttons. I'm sure you can handle it somehow.
Maybe you mean too many menu items. Well...OK, let's look at this. Maya Unlimited comes with probably the largest featureset of any package out there. Polygon / NURBs / Subdiv modelling, each with their own set of tools. Soft & rigid body dynamics. Skinning. Texturing. Cloth. PaintFX. Particles. All of these are major features, and will require a number of menu items to work with.
The entire interface is customisable, and you can turn off whatever menu items you're not using....so your complaint is totally unfounded.
Slow eh? What exactly were you running it on? It's $2000 for the main package. Presumably, given you clearly have enough money to have bought and thoroughly tested Maya Unlimited, you're running it on a decent rig?
Hmmm.
I've got it running pretty damn nicely on a Athlon 1.4G with Win2k and a Geforce4 Ti4200. The machines at university with Wildcats in absolutely fly.
Now, stop trolling, and kindly provide some sort of content in your future posts.

Yeeeeeah, Maya really sucks. That's why all the biggest studios in the world use it all the time on the biggest films.
Go ask these studios if they'd rather make their multi-million dollar films with Max instead, becasue Maya really suck, and you'd have roaring laughter echoing throughout the entire studio.
And please, don't bring up Blur studio or Blizzard. Yes, they kick ass, and yes they use Max. We all know that.
It's the artist, not the tool. All major 3D packages are competent. It's always the artist that isn't.
BTW, whichever one of us wins this argument will be the uber dork. ![](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

I'm not sure what the prices are now, but last time I checked, max was cheaper than maya... which would explain why big studios use it, if both progs are gonna get u nearly the same results.... which do u think they would use?
Just some food for thought.

Revility- Max is more expensive than Maya Complete. Maya dropped their prices months ago. |

I had never heard about Maya or Creator until I worked 2 years in UK. I saw all the character artists and animators using Maya, one of them was sometimes producing several cool looking characters, we're talking thousands of polys on a PS2 game, in a week's time. All the background artists were using 'Creator'. We were also programming on Linux machines, only the artists had Windows loaded.. not a single 3dsmax running in the studio >D |

I have used heaps of 3D programs, Rhino, Softimage, 3DSMAX, Maya, etc... and as far as producion quality and efficiency go Maya seems to be the best. The only qualm I have with the program is that the rendering engine isn't as good as some programs...
- and what's this about too many buttons?????? |
