(Taken from Feng Zhu's website)

"Q: I can't find those Pilot Hi-Tec-C pens anywhere. I even checked out Pilot's website!
Where did you buy them?

A: If you are in Los Angeles, you can buy them at Little Toyko. There's a big bookstore
on the second floor of Toyko Plaza (next to Curry House). Inside and to the left you'll find
the pens; along w/ many other cool pens."

Buy them from me!

Before I left Japan I made sure to buy fistfulls of them back with me to Canada. I have yet to find a pen soooo well suited for both writeing and drawing, no smudges, no goop, awesome. I'm not sure about the states but in Japan you can get them in just about any color, some really nice dark and light browns, nice greens too. I don't think you are supposed to draw with them but how can you resist? They come in 0.3, 0.4 and 0.4, I find 0.3 cuts into the paper a bit (maybe I press too hard) and 0.5 is a bit too thick. I went out and found that you can buy the black 0.4 here at Staples in Canada for about 4 dollars, which is 3 dollars more than they cost back in Japan. You might want to give them a try.

if your outside of canada or japan. it might take a bit of looking....but i know that in canada they can (sometimes) be found at staples or office depot. i saw some at grand and toy as well (are they out of business now?) look at your local office or art and craft stores and im sure you will find sometihng. try a hobby shop as well....they sell some amazing paintbrushes and pens there also.

i bought several thousand pens in japan as well....but i also bought a different one (cant read the japanese on it) and it started out as being the perfect art pen....good for writing, drawing, inking etc..it looked like a penpaintbrush. it was perfect (and expensive) so i bought a few more. i had my drawings in a little binder. it was a rainy day. i brought my binder with me. the wetness got inside and all of my art was covered in the ink from one of the drawings. the pens were so good too.....not waterproof

If you're in a larger metropolitan area/city, then all you need to do is find a Japanese stationery store, or a store that is part of a distributor. Kinokuniya is fairly decently sized. Or perhaps a Mitsuwa or Yaohan shopping center. there are a few in large areas, on the west coast and in the mid-west.
If not, then look for info online to order and have the pens shipped from such. I get them shipped a few times a year, having bought a number and distributed them to members of the art department that I'm in, I place pretty large orders.
And yes, your tools and materials do make a difference.

Look who else uses them...:

Type "hi-tec-c" into yahoo and you get some strange places, there's a japanese web ring dedicated just to them.

I order them from the Kinokuniya Stationery store in Japan Center, in San Francisco. I have them sent out UPS. Damn if I can find their card right now though, frustrating. Will post up the number if I find it.
Good luck hunting them, and be sure to get a couple of the brown as well as the black if you do figure work.

e-x,

I love those pens. I've been using them for about 8 years now. Kinokuniya is your best bet. They used to ship them to me when I was teaching in Switzerland.

sorry e-x, I don't look in here too often. Yes, that's the place, and they're really good about shipping. The pens are about 3.25 or so apiece, and of course shipping on top of that.
Good luck.

If anyone ever looks for inking brush/pen combinations and you're near one of their stores, they carry a pretty decent line of those as well... you may have to experiment, but a couple have a great black ink in them.
Don't know how lightfast they are though. Haven't tested them yet.

D
