I have this blue border and a little grey icon in the top left corner on the canvas, When I want to hide tha selection, I have to press Ctrl-H twice, one time for hiding the blue border, and once for the selection, it bugs me!
also, Does anyone know how to get the same effect with the Color dodge layer as in photoshop 5.5?

Capt... That little icon is probably the slice icon. If so, use menu view/show/ and if the slice is checked, click on it to uncheck it.
Not sure about the color dodge compat with 5.5... but I sure like the way it works in 7 with the new layers fill control added to the opacity control... |

color dodge doesn't behave as in ps5.5 because the new algorythm does not compute the alpha channel*color the same way as it used to > you have to draw the highlights on a black layer to avoid having alpha on your layer :
create a new layer
fill it with plain black
turn the layer to 'color dodge'
draw. |
