bleh... my main harddrive crashed so now i gotta install everything again. :/
i used a real old version of acdsee before and i liked it, kindof...
i thought i'd try it again and i hated the new version.
does anyone know any good alternatives?
the program that comes with XP isn't very good...

IrfanView is freeware and pretty good, but the ole ACD versions are still da cream of da crop.

I don't like ACDSee4 it's to much junk packed in to it just for an excuse to sell a new version. Therefore I still use 3.1 version. its very customisable and still fast.

thanks, but i didn't like ifranview, sometimes it 'stuck' on one picture and you could'nt browse anymore.

does anyone know of any other programs?

I'm a texture artist so I have thousands of high res reference photos that I need to browse all the time, so obviously I spent a lot of time finding the right program to do this

of course there could be something better but I have found Compupic to be the best for me. It saves all the thumbnails to a database so it loads up directorys quickly, and It almost never crashes. Much better than ACDCEE in my opinion.

XnView is good, and has a lot of image editing/converting features that ACDC has and its free.

i must say that B3AND1P's suggestion compupic is the one i liked most.

I've tried compupicup and i can say that i still favour ACDSee3.1 (mark my words-> 3.1 not 4) I noticed that acdsee uses less memmory and feels more stable.
I'd say that ACDSee is the fastet and simplest when it comes to simply view but that Compupic has a more customizability and options which makes it slightly slower and i also noticed some slight delays here and there when browsing directories.
I will go on using ACDSee becaus it's rocksolid-fast, stable and you can simplyfy/stripp the interface to the bones making it sooooo wonderfully clean.

...Maybe I should add that I've turned the "thumbnail database" off, in both programs, becaus it grows pretty large after a while. And thats where it feels like ACDSee winns in my opinion.

AcdSee Classic. Can't beat it. None of the overloaded crap of version 4, and you can select a bunch of pics and rotate at the same time(ctrl+r)--real life saver for digital photographers.

As much as I didn't like version 4 at first, I've found some great features in it that has become a must-have on my desktop:

1)kickass screen capture tool
2)Photocanvas lite--for tasks that don't really need photoshop's big guns.
3)file conversion function--this version doesn't overwrite your original files. I've overwritten lots of files by mistake in the past. . ..
4)direct browsing in .zip files

I wish I could have all that in AcdSee Classic.

i use a program called ThumbsPlus at work.. i look at a lot of art reference so it's used a bunch.. it's worked better than ACDSee, which i used to have. it was too slow and crashed enough that i threw it away after i got sick of it

Damn. I just tried all the other image viewers that you guys mentioned. They are ALL good. Now I have to use them ALL and decide on just ONE. Grrr.....

I hate AcdSee 4. I just reinstalled the OS, and thought it was time to upgrade from my trusty AcdSee Classic. Version 4 has a disgusting, uncustomizable layout, it adds a lot of junk to the Registry (like File-new commands), and there are a zillion clotted things I do not need nor want my image browser to handle.

I'd stick with AcdSee CLassic, if it weren't for the fact that it doesn't handle PSD with some compressions (especially the ones Painter makes?), and it doesn't read Painter's Riff files. I guess I'll have to try Thumbs and Compupic instead, but it really makes me sad... they've destroyed my baby...

the new acd version is the crappies shitties shitty shit bang bang shitty x2 programs out there. Its slow, its interface is cramps with USELESS features. Damn it, i just want a simple image viewing program is that too hard to ask?!!!!!

I uninstalled it right away and found my good old ACD v2.43 ! OHHHHHH THE GOOD OLD DAYS!!!!!!!
